one for the computer wizards

hi all, recently bought new computer nothing special about it. I loaded all my software back on and now 4 programs that i usually had to start by clicking on their icon start up.
I know there is some where on this thing you an go to to say what should start and what should not. any one out there any idea where it is hiding it would be appreciated if some one can help. running XP pro. Ok inow this is off topic but it has been a bit quiet so thought i would ask.
regards

Hi Al, from memory, go to Start - Run.  Type in MSCONFIG & hit Enter.

Click the Startup tab.

On the list of programs uncheck the ones you don't want to automatically start.

Click Apply and/or Ok & reboot.

Cheers Neil

Generally this is under something like Tools > Options.

Something you may have missed is in the installation process. Quite often ther are tick options to have the programme launch when you start the computer. Alternately the program may have a quick launch option loaded at start up. The problem is that these tick boxes have a tick in them by default. If you don't notice them and untick the box whilst doing the install you get the feature starting each time you boot. There is the odd program that the only way to disable the feature is to uninstall the program and reinstall it.
