W.A. gold fields

Hi All

For all the time I have been a member here I have read nothing at all about gold prospecting.

I have in mind one day soon buying an off road van some thing like a phoenix 20 footer ( I am a solo) and travelling to the W.A. gold fields during the winter months for a bit of fun and to try my luck there. .

My van would be used as a sometimes on dirt but not as a off road van but instead would hire an off road camper while in the gold fields.

I would not expect to find gold but that type of adventure appeals to me.

So I would like to hear your comments on what I have in mind and from anyone who has done some trips like I have descried.

Peter.

Quite a few do prospect for gold using metal detectors Peter and the serious ones find gold too!
I bought a $1200 detector 'cos I thought I would enjoy it. I found it dead boring and sold the detector. I would sooner sit on a rock with a rod and not catch a fish.
Those realy into it generally use Minelab detectors and spend $5,000 plus, but get their money back.

Cheers,
Peter

did a bit of panning for gold up around castlemaine vic in the early 70's. had lots of fun drank lots of beer after it. alas the back wouldnt take it today. had a mate call round a while back and he had pockets full of nuggets that he found with a detector. he was detecting in the kimberley somewhere, at least thats what he told us. give it a go you may just like it. for myself i'd be sitting on the rock with the other pete... lol

Thanks for your replies.
What do think about the idea for hiring a quality camper trailer in place of using an off road van? Is that a better idea than using some thing like a phoenix?

As for fishing well I figure its not that far from central W.A. to the coast and the seasonal timing should enable a bit of time for that as well, just before a quick trip to Tassie for the summer.

CCB.Its good fun looking for gold, Dont be put of by some people that have a small look see and didnt do any good .. We have been going over to the west gold feilds for the last 4 years and have done quite well .Payed for the trip and then some ..BUT its hard work getting all the info to gether and knowing where you can and CARNT go.. Do your home work and it will be fun..The must have is the very best detector..4500 minelab is the best as of now . and know how to use it. Get a miners wright and go to the mines dept. for a tengraph so you DONT go on some ones lease..not many will tell you where to go, nicely that is..Smile..Just do it ..winter is the best time... that red dust gets into every thing...The roads are good..its
the way to go..Bob n Bev

The Kimberley gold fields are around Halls Creek. Good luck with that.
