G'day all, Time to update the tug. I have been looking at a diesel Prado or a Kluger around about the 2006 vintage. Are there any members with some knowledge on these vehicles that can give me a bit of a rundown?? Cheers, Magnarc

While the Kluger is a fantastic Town AWD and a good solf 'Off Roader" it's not in the same class as a Diesel Prado when it comes to towing. Of the two you've named the Prado gets my vote. ozjohn.

G'day Magnarc, the Prado by a country mile........diesel, lots of torque, good economy, comfortable ride and then there is the 180 litre fuel tank.....only downside from a buyers point of view is the second hand price is still quite high. All the best Ozi
The NRMA magazine "Open Road" reviewed the 2006 Prado, and said the petrol version gave better accelleration. Theres plenty of "pulling power" in the diesel model, its just a bit slow on the highway if you need to accellerate to overtake.
I understood that was what was meant by "torque"?
Yes, the 180 litre fuel tank is great... never need to carry jerry-cans of fuel! We have travelled 1400k's (when not towing) on a tankful. And we got approx 1100k's when towing a camper-trailer which was 1500kgs.
And yes, they are rated to tow 2500kgs.

The Prado is far superior. As for torque, the diesel has low down torque for pulling and the petrol although far quicker when not towing gets it's torque much higher in the rev range making it a lesser vehicle for towing. Also the fuel consumption in the diesel when towing is much better.

Gidday, and Goodluck, I to have been trying to work out a Tug Update, for the last couple of months, WHAT A BL---Y NIGHTMARE, Have you considered one of the 4 Door utes !! you can pick up one of them for better money than a Prado, and most of them will tow your 2500kgs [ or more ] I am considering a Triton glx-r at the moment, just working out the extra cost of buying a diesel motor, with the strict servicing procedures and costs to ensure the best chance of reliability, and warranty back-up !!! as from all the research i have been doing, when a diesel engine, packs up it is very very expensive to repair, and it seems to me that the common rail diesels of today, are very high tech. and very sensitive to fuel quality etc. and in my humble opinion all 4WD drives today have to many computors to control there operations and 4 wds are made to rock and roll, but computors are not !!!
As for the Prado, they are a tried and proven reliable tug, both diesel and petrol, and i may be wrong but i think the petrol model also has a 180ltr tank !!!!
and the old story is true, if you are towing diesel is the better,but it depends on how much towing you do,!!! if you do say, 25000 klm per year, and only tow for 5 or 6000klm then is diesel really the better option !!!!! I don't know any more as i said it gets to bl--dy confusing !!!
