Working Around Oz -Tax Deductible?

Hiya All,

I plan on starting travelling in June 2011 and will hopefully be on the road for 12 months.  I am hoping to pick up casual work as I go to help fund the trip.

I found a website that has stated that it is possible to claim travelling expenses as long as a job has been found and confirmed before you leave your current location.

I'd be interested to know if anyone else is aware if this is fact or fallacy?

Keep Smiling :)

The simple answer is to ask the Taxation Department. Google ATO. They will give you advise.

Cheers,
Peter

As well as cashies there are other options, work for accomodation on farms etc. sometimes they chuck in meat, milk, power etc and you only have to put in a few hours a week.

There are a lot of places around the block that want volunteers and will provide a camping spot and power.

A lot of caravan parks will offer cashies or accomodation in return for work (cleaning gardening etc)

Hiya All,

Thanks for all the suggestions.....all good I might add......I think cashies are still alive and well (well they were when I renovated recently!!!!!!!) and the exchange idea is great ie work for food/accommodation ........all great ideas........and I'm sure I'll do both as I travel/work around our beaut oz.

Keep Smiling :)

Check the site Ian suggested - they also do free seminars and there are things that you must do to claim your klms & accommodation and meals - it can be done but you must keep a log etc - they have the details, they have tested this for a lot travellers doing the tax  returns and give you the ATO rulings that apply - it is not straight forward ato look up.
We are intending to follow this when do the working trip around Oz in a couple of years.

Seems there's no shortage of tax evaders on this forum

My suggestion is to get good advice from an accountant. (in addition to some of the above suggestions).  That way you can establish what you're entitled to claim and arrange your affairs to legally minimise your tax liability.
