The previous thread about (possibly) feeding crocs in the NT has reminded me about the number of tourists I've seen who ignore the "dont feed the wildlife" signs.
Our wild creatures will gobble up whatever they are given even if it isnt good for them, end become pests, dangerous even, hanging around campgrounds looking for a handout.... or whatever they can steal. Dingoes, goannas, crows and many other creatures can be really scary when they are hungry. Remember Azaria Chamberlain.
Kangaroos and macropods in general should never be fed on bread, their chewing apparatus is designed for grasses etc and the soft bread cant be cleared from their mouths forming a lump inside their cheek. Apparently this leads to mouth ulceration and possibly death because they eventually cant eat at all.
There are so many signs, but so many tourists seem to think those signs only apply to somebody else.
Great post Gert, we should all obey these signs. They are put there for a reason.
Although, at times, its difficult not to feed the birds. Was sitting outside my van at Island View C/P Narooma, earlier this year, eating an apple. A beautiful rainbow lorikeet flew down, landed on my hand and started eating the apple. I got a bit of a shock at first but then got a knife and cut a bit off the apple and threw it on the ground. Worst thing I could've did. A million lorikeets came from everywhere to get that bit of apple. Of course I did the right thing and cut another bit off and threw it amongst the squarking birds. Another million birds turned up. Threw a bit more apple down, and then I couldn't get rid of the buggers. They just hung around waiting for another tasty morsel.
what about feeding seagulls? I sometimes sit in my car down at the shoalhaven river on a nice sunny weekend arvo and feed them , and my self while listening to the footy on the radio...
I retract my earlier post... seagulls do count! Just imagine the filthy state of the worlds shores without them! They clean almost every bit of garbage up.
