You are doing what anyone of us would do, talking it out, thinking aloud whatever it takes to make it easier to comprehend the situation.
Not one person will grouch at you for that ( if they do they have ME to answer to), I will praise you for your positive attitude and bravery for talking about it, mate if you read my blog you will see that I am a depression sufferer and the best cure for all of this is to talk about it.
Mate my Mum bred Border Collies for years and they are the best mate anyone could have, but then we all reach that stage in life where someone has to make the decision they hate to make.
Quite a few years ago Mum had a Lhasa Apso named Saffron who was awarded the grouchiest dog at show once, fair dinkum this dog had small dog syndrome BIG time, when he was taken to the vets, Dad had to trap his head in the door of the cage while the vet examined him or he would've ripped the vets arm off, on his last visit he knew the reason he was there because lay down in the cage and licked the vet and let him do his job....... went to sleep peacfully.
So there you go mate make your decision in the comfort of knowing Ben knows you are doing everything for him & that it is in Bens best interest. Also that you have the whole Grey Nomads website community here as your friends and ears in your darkest hour mate if you need someone to listen give me a call (numbers in PM) I am all ears.
To ben,
One last hoorah old mate, peace and tranquility awaits you, but before you go, we applaude you old mate its your turn to take a bow wow wow.........go in peace and watch over Milo as mates and friends do.
I am shedding a tear now too milo, take life as it comes, for **** sake it don't last long enough.

LEAVE THE PLACE IN A BETTER CONDITION THAN YOU FOUND IT !!!
Milo, sorry to hear about Ben. This is a poem I found which got me through the sudden death of my Golden Retriever, Amber. Hope this helps you as it did me.
Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
