Recently Pat and I drove over from Adelaide to Torquay towing our van with an Avis Troopy. Due to our inexperience of towing a large van and the effect of semi's sucking us in, travelling in the same direction I did most of the driving, as men do. Well I decided to return the Avis back to Adelaide without a break, overnight. And then to compound the problem came straight back to Torquay. Used to do it when I was younger but even after several 10 minute eye naps I witnessed the micro sleep for the first and hopefully the last time. Thanks to a semi blowing his air horns to wake me it scared the daylights out of me, to the point, the rest of the trip I managed. I have noted the signage over the years, and yes it was stupid of me to do that distance without a decent break but please be warned. The accident that could have been could well have affected some other innocent people as we all know has happened before so often. There is no doubt in my mind that most accidents in the country are due to this effect.
Hi Technomad Yes the dreaded micro sleep I have been a still driving heavy vehicles for a living and I have at different times had 1 of those dreaded micro sleeps. Like Milo have always had a break after 2-2.5 hours for half hour as that is the law when incharge of heavy vehicles I would rather be a little late to my destination than be dead on arrival. Just my 20 cents worth. urs excited-newbies
Micro sleep or power nap, I know which I would rather take. Have had power naps in some delightful spots around the traps... most recent one that comes to mind was Ulladulla beside the river - i napped while he walked (I had to drive all day, cos he was crook)
