Air intake vents for air-con in pop-tops

Marvelous what you find when you crawl under a brand new caravan! The air intake vents for the air-con are under the floor, and consist of 6 circular holes 3" wide protected only by nylon insect screen. confuse (Its a Jayco Discovery "Outback" pop-top) The dealer, when we complained, said this is quite usual, and they had never had any complaints about water/mud etc getting into the air-con via these holes.  Judging by the dirty underside of our vehicle we are a bit doubtful about this!

Does anybody else have a van with this type of air-intake? Does dust and road splash  get in?

When a sales type responds with "no ones ever complained before" respond with "and the cheque's in the mail", and/or "and I caught it off a toilet seat", and/or "of course I'll respect you in the morning"

I take it you have an Air Command Herron A/C. If this is the case then the installation you explained is as per Air Commands installation specifictation and I've never seen one installed any other way.
Cheers, ozjohn.

Any hole in the floor will let dust in, the only way we found to keep dust out was to lift the front of our 4season hatch and pressure the van, that worked to a degree.. Friends of ours have the same van and the air con has a problem, he carnt work out how they get to it..to fix the thing.. had to put a stop on the hatch to stop it being blown off..

Gert.
I've had them in 3 vans and never experience any problem with dust or water ingress.
Another point though is to clean the filters under the inside condensor (Fan) unit at least once a year.
Cheers, ozjohn.

I have actually seen a van where the owner fitted a hatch over the inlet which could be closed for travel, only thing is you wouldn't want to forget to open it or close it again when you travelled!!

Can't say I had any problems with mine underneath on the Jayco I had, checked it a few times and ran a dust pan brush over the holes which had mozzie type mesh over the holes inside, although it didn't look like it needed it.

Thank you for your replies... we are reassured! smile

Think we might put a cover over it for the Gibb River road next year, cant use the air-con while bush-camping anyway.
