Friends of ours who wouldnt mind being described as nomads but would probably object to the grey lol, early 60's went from Canberra to Adelaide, by ute then over the Nullabor by train, Navy reunion then up the coast to the most western part then across to the most eastern (Capre Bryon I think) then home. Called in for a beer or three as one does, but they said they wouldn't do it any other way. Not for me but its certainly an option that many do..... cheers pete

That's how I started off Tony, the also make some great single and double sleeping bag type tents now mounted on stretchers which keep you off the ground and away from all the nasties.

I saw the oztent stand and tents at the recent 4WD show in Perth, not cheap but impressive, see their website;

We started in a tent and the last trip we did three weeks in one. We travelled the Gibb River Road so left the van in Darwin.

They are great for what we wanted but I wouldn't go back to the tent alone. Too many comforts in the little Hawke now for these old bones. biggrin

Just bought our new van, but no way would we part with our tents. We started our "fun" with one, before graduating to a camper trailer. Still have those tents hoping our kids will come with us sometime.Cheers Dellie

I live in a van full time as my permanent home, and I have tented for camping trips. I have one of those camp stretchers with a tent over the top now for the camping occasions. I also have a gazebo tent which can be just screen, walled, with roof and floor.
Full time nomadding with a tent would be a hard way of doing it - cheap but hard.
Personal choice.

the bride and i have purchased an oztent and we use it a fair bit when time allows takes a little time to set up "camp" but we do a bit of bush camping in some places that a "van" would be hard to get into,, i guess for extended trips a tent might get a bit of a pain putting up and taking down all the time but for short periods of ,, say upto a month maybe it can be good, just depends on how much comfort you want it guess,, if you want all the luxuries of home you may as well stay home,,,,,i have a 4wd hilux ute which next year i hope to fit a roof top tent to, seems easier just for an over night stop, the oztent is good as a base camp for several days in the bush,, if it rains , well you get wet,, isn't that a part of camping anyway,,,for a round australia trip i think a van would be the better option if for no other reason than the ease of setting it up, nothing easier than just opening the door !!!maybe hire or borrow a tent and try it before buying one, just to see if you like it
