God Bless Australia was a proposed 1961 Australian national anthem by Australian song writer Jack O'Hagan who provided patriotic lyrics to the traditional tune of WALTZING MATILDA:
Here in this God given land of ours, Australia This proud possession, our own piece of earth That was built by our fathers, who pioneered our heritage, Here in Australia, the land of our birth.
CHORUS:
God bless Australia, Our land Australia Home of the Anzac, the strong and the free It's our homeland, our own land, To cherish for eternity, God bless Australia, the land of the free
Here in Australia, we treasure love and liberty, Our way of life, all for one, one for all We're a peace loving race, but should danger ever threaten us, Let the world know we will answer the call
When I was a kid at school we either sang "God Save The King" (King George) or "Song of Australia" written by an English immigrant author called Caroline Carleton and sang to the music by a German immigrant intellectual Carl Linger, both from South Australia. These are the words, if you google the title there is a play version of the song with music on the links that come up. From memory, we only ever sang the first verse :
THE SONG OF AUSTRALIA There is a land where summer skies Are gleaming with a thousand dyes, Blending in witching harmonies, in harmonies; And grassy knoll, and forest height, Are flushing in the rosy light, And all above in azure bright - Australia! Australia! Australia
There is a land where honey flows, Where laughing corn luxuriant grows, Land of the myrtle and the rose, On hill and plain the clust'ring vine, Is gushing out with purple wine, And cups are quaffed to thee and thine - Australia! Australia! Australia!
There is a land where treasures shine Deep in the dark unfathomed mine, For worshippers at Mammon's shrine, Where gold lies hid, and rubies gleam, And fabled wealth no more doth seem The idle fancy of a dream - Australia! Australia! Australia!
There is a land where homesteads peep From sunny plain and woodland steep, And love and joy bright vigils keep, Where the glad voice of childish glee Is mingling with the melody For nature's hidden minstrelsy - Australia! Australia! Australia !
There is a land where, floating free, From mountain top to girdling sea, A proud flag waves exultingly, And freedom's sons the banner bear, No shackled slave can breathe the air, Fairest of Britain's daughters fair - Australia! Australia ! Australia !

Maybe I should have stated that I had no intention of even suggesting that the National Anthem should be changed. This was just something I came across and it just appealed to me, so thought I would share it.
Think I will keep my likes and dislikes to myself in future!
Nothing wrong with your post Ma just some people only want to discuss Grey Nomad things, as if we were incapable of discussing other topics.
Well they are going the right way to kill the forum off. As Grey Nomads we are capable of discussing a wide range of topics but there is at least one here who would prefer we didn't.

REPEAT CHORUS.
Hey Ma, I'd never heard of these songs. Not that you'd want to change the National Anthem, but I particularly like the chorus to the God Bless Australia one !!
As a G.N. I am pretty sure most of us like to discuss other things as well as the main like in our lives being G.Nomading. Pretty boring if we only had one subject allowed for discussion. (My view)
The national anthem is another one of those contentious subjects like the flag, immigration & politics that may be best left alone on this forum. People will always have (and are allowed to have) their own views on the subject & no one is really right or wrong.
I's ok to talk about the other things not connected to grey nomading if it is something you think is worth us all knowing or something you think others will enjoy or get a giggle from but all too often these subjects end up in useless arguing as seen on other forums
Stay happy Jon

As a member of Sing australia, we regularly sing wonderful Australian songs, including "Shelter", "I Love a Sunburnt country", "Australia for Me", "I Am Australian", and I am often moved by words written both recently and long ago. We also sing the National Anthem, and whatever we may think of it as a song, its still the National Anthem and we sing it with respect.
Maybe I should have stated that I had no intention of even suggesting that the National Anthem should be changed. This was just something I came across and it just appealed to me, so thought I would share it.
Same here Ma, no reason why we shouldn't be able to either (make other threads within reason). I am certainly not advocating any changes, the songs are part of our Australian History, especially the older versions which were around that we had to sing at school.
Agree with your post too JRH!

God bless you MA!!! I am sure that you have been an inspiration to your family and friends, And Yes!!!! don't be deterred by some of the comments, as my view is that a forum is a place to express your opInion and stuff what anybody else thinks. Obviously they read your comments and than have the hide to slam you for it. Just remember MA.... IT IS GOOD AT TIME TO "DARE TO BE DIFFERENT" I like you MA stand up for our flag and the national anthem. Proud to be an Aussie. Jay&Dee
Firstly, apologies Elaine if I misinterpreted the purpose of your post, My mind-reading skills failed again.
I agree that this is primarily a forum about issues relevant to caravan and "RV" travel rather than other issues but the range of topics can still be broad rather than narrow. However contentious political issues such as Immigration or the Republic etc have the potential to be divisive and should be "off limits" for this forum.
Jim
PS: Welcome to the forum Jaydee, I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone on this forum who didn't share your views about the National Anthem and the Flag.

Good on you Jim, I understand where you are coming from and how it could have been misinterpreted. We all value you opinion (I know I do) the same as others here on the forum and I thank you for your past advice on my pc problems. I like your rig too by the way, looks like it means business !

If any of you listen to "Macca" on a Sunday morning, you will sometimes hear these wonderful old songs.
I'd never heard of some of them, 'till I met my last Ex, who was South Australian. I particularly like "The Song of Australia." I think Donald Smith used to sing that one.
Another one I like is "Arada".
Cheers, Sheba.

Yes Macca On A Sunday (ABC) is great to listen to Sheba on a Sunday for anyone travelling around Oz with radio reception (and at home too), for those who don't know he travels Oz and does his show all around Oz in mostly small towns, with interviews of locals and Oz people from everywhere in Oz and overseas.
Sheba, The Song Of Australia was first sung on a recording (gramophone record) by Peter Dawson in 1933. He also sang other songs you may be interested in, google "Peter Dawson Songs Australia" and it will bring them up to listen to and also give the history etc. You will also see on the links a band version of the song played by The Royal Australian Navy.
Regards Vic
