G'day All, I am shortly going to need a new set of tyres for the Pajero and would like some advice. I have some friends telling me that Cooper tyres are the best and others say that you can't go past Goodrich all terrain. I would be grateful for your views. I have Maxxis 351 ATS on my Hilux and the front tyres have done 40000 klms. I can buy them in Townsville for about $180 each fitted, and would recomend them to anyone.
I have had BF,s started off ok, they had enough left to do a trip around aussie when the two rear failed in three days;as in fell apart. have heard of many coopers having the tread layer comming off up north in the heat . currently running Micky Thompson FC2.going good. Maxxis have a good name.

G'day all, i have bridgestone duellers with LT(light truck) construction. I've found them to be very hard wearing and are 25 to30 dollars cheaper than bfg or coopers.
done the gibb river road, the gulf country, cape york, innaminka all on pirreli,s never had a puncture, would not buy anything else. Guess if you have luck with one brand stick with it.
Hi, I have a set of Maxxis on my Challenger and they have done 57000 and I expect to get at least another 10000 as there is still good tread left. They cost me around $180 a couple of years ago and I will stick with this brand when renewal times comes. Around a third of my mileage was done with a Golf caravan in tow Keith

I have been happy with my Coopers but I have a friend who lives in Cooktown who had the problem in the heat that you mention. I've always been led to believe that BFGs are a good tyre but I don't have any first hand experience to go on.
A few years ago I was on a 4WD tag-along and one of the participants had near new Micky Thompsons fitted and they "chewed out" the tread on the rocky 4WD tracks in the Flinders Ranges. They may have been a bad batch so that may be an unfair comment. I don't have any information on how they got on with a warranty claim.
I have no knowledge of the Maxxis brand but as I'm due to replace the tyres on the Goldstream I'll take on board the comments in this thread.
I've been recommended Firestone All terrain (made by Bridgestone) ATM of the rig is 1350 and tyre size is 235 x 75 x 15. I think these tyres have a load rating of 1030 kg
I haveSilverstone A T117 Specials on 98 Pajero have done 82000kms sofar 2 just about ready for replacement, had these on when i bought it 2nd hand, they did 117000kms & still had more left the only people who believe me are the mechanics in cobram who regulary service vehicle so will buy them again, $185.00 fitted at Tyrrpower, only puncture was going up MT Nameless in Tom Price, cost me $385.00 for Bridgestone there& only got 42000kms out off that
There was no way I was going to pay over $300 per tyre for a set of 4 when I wasn't even going to do any real rough terrain 4WDing (just dirt roads etc) & mainly for pulling the caravan
After much internet researching I bought a set of Maxxis 771 for the Landcruiser as they had glowing reports on the forums etc & have very strong sidewalls which are needed for towing. I am very happy with them.

Funny how tyres come up every now and then, It all depends what you do and where you drive.. Couldnt think of a worse thing than haveing big luggy things and only driveing on the black..They look good ask any young guy. If you only tow your van on dirt 20% of the time get a nice semi dirt tyre.. If you dont go near dirt get the best type for that.. The more lugs the less ks you will get, plus the more noise and you will have to rotate more to keep the ware even.. Cooper tell you to run them on a low pres. If i run my back tyres under 48 the van sways . Brands ?? which is the best .The are all made in china and there is not that much diff. Price is the thing, I run good year wranglers with cevlar belting.. 4 fitted well under a thou. Just passed 35thou and still looking good.. On the van 8ply LT.. And Ive fitted a tyre watch bizo on the van as well as the tug..worth the time to do this.. Drive easy guys its part of the fun.......Bob .... ex tyre fitter...yep ive seen it all..and still none the wiser..

Had coopers hated them worst tyres ever now have michelin syncrone coming up to 85,000 klms still lots of tread left love em drive nice as well 100 series cruiser
On my second set of Cooper HT on the Partol. Replaced the first set with >80,000k & around 10 k left. Was going on a trip to WA from Qld, so I changed them to the current set. Only done around 30,000 so far on them & still lots of tread.
Anyone had any experience with Kumho tyres...good or bad?
Jim, had two sets of kummo a few years back.worst tyres I,ve ever seen. never wore one out. had every thing from a blowout of a brand new one to seperations, no resistance to puntures, some times three a day. I ended up with two sets through replacements, took them off when we got home . Would not fit them to a wheel barrow.
The micky thompson has e few different patterns, maybe the open tread suffered on the stones? Mine have had one trip to the roper in NT, no stone damage.
A friend has Maxxiss muddies on a F250 with the same on the Bushtrakker, been accross Gibb Rv & WA gorges , no problems, I have two Maxxis on the van as well.

Re the Mickey Thompsons... they really badly chewed out and one was destroyed. As there were several vehicles in the convoy we were able to compare.
I did hear the "bad batch" story through the "grapevine", also that they may have got a warranty claim but as I've had no contact with them since and the story was "umpteenth" hand I'm not in a position to confirm this.
Probably best to treat this as a "one off" and not a general bagging of the product.
