I saw the pic of the fish- What a monster!and caught out of a kayak, too. My biggest is 127cm, released from Peter faust dam at Proserpine, in a 10ft tinnie. It was caught on a home hade deep diving lure, which I lost on the next fish. The fish in these dams don,t breed, but grow to enormous sizes, so taking them is not going to kill a big breeding female.I don,t kill tham myself as they are a bit coarse to eat anyway. Who could kill such a beautiful fish?i suppose keeping one as a trophy is acceptable.

Not sure how long my biggest was but it was 23lbs caught in salt water. Personally I dont see it as a problem taking these huge fish, as they dont breed in the impoundments and they must eat a hell of a lot of the fingerlings that are put in there to replace them. The barra I ate at Wuruma the other week was excellent. I guess it depends on which water they come out of.

I'm 5ft.6 .  When I lived up the Cape, [Temple Bay.]  we used to net the creek mouth once every 6 months or so, to fill the freezer.

We used to quite often get them about that size, if not bigger.  When I held them shoulder height by the gills, the tails were still dragging on the sand.

Never bothered about catching them on a line.  Great to fillet..LOL.

Then again, I think the most challenging fish I ever had to fillet was a Turrum, that measured 3ft from the top of the back to the belly.

Cheers,
Sheba.

There is no line under it.  If you look at the one you could access, you'll see it was underlined.  I can't remember exactly how it happens now, but when I Post links, I think it happens when you click "enter" after finishing, to start a new line.

Cheers,
Sheba.

To all the fisher folk out there, I live near the mouth of the Boyne River , down stream from Awoonga dam and there are hundreds of BIG barra that have gone over the wall of the dam and many have died. Unfortunately the dead ones are all over the beach at Boyne Is. and most are 1M. or there abouts and some are up to 1.3 or maybe bigger. The local water board estimate 20000 have escaped and they also think that 10-15% didn't survive the drop, thats a lot of dead fish (it's a bit smelly on the beach). I'll see if I can get the brains trust to get some photos out to show you

Do you catch these fish which escape over the dam? Do the majority of these fish survive in the salt water? It would be great if they did  as, I suppose, they would be able to breed. So much for the greenies saying that stocking dams is a waste of time.

It's the greenies that are the waste of time (and space) Bill!

Ooops! better stop here before I get political!

All the fish that escape the dam and are now in the river are out of season until Feb.1 so taking fish is not for another 25 days. The river is still tasting fresh at the mouth so they won't have felt the change but I think it's the same with any Barra in that they migrate between fresh and salt so hopefully these will be OK, there's alot of hopeful fishermen in town waiting to find out

Don't tell the greenies that stocking dams is beneficial to the environment... It'll take away something for them to protest about!

(sarcasm intended)
