Noels. do I understand correctly that you are leaving Tasmania on the 14th Feb, and have to be in Perth on the 20th? Are you towing a caravan on this trip? Are you travelling alone?
It seems a huge distance in 6 days, is it possible for you to leave earlier?

G'day Noels, ditto the advice of Gerty; it is a huge drive and more so if towing. Pls allow a safe time to drive as the Nullabour is fascinating, but driving at night is a major problem with the amount of transports and very high danger of wildlife incidents that could cause you no end of problems. If you choose to sleep overnight in van or whatever then try to avoid truck stops and if unavoidable then keep out of their right of way. Whilst traveling through Victoria please try to refrain from topping up their treasury with your hard earned cash. I got hit with a fine for $149.00 for 5kph over their limit( their state motto should be Fine All Day The suggestion of Dodge to google maps is a good idea, works a treat. I'm not sure but at this time of the year when heading West you may have a headwind that will slow your down if towing ( just a tip to take into account) perhaps check the weather forecast. Have a safe and happy journey, cheers, Ozi
From Station Pier Melbourne, if you are coming across from Tassie, this would be our preferred route http://tinyurl.com/4u4gul7 via Mildura, hopefully the Victorian floods will have gone by mid Feb.
Avoids Melbourne Toll Roads (once on land) and Adelaide City plus only a bit further than going to/through Adelaide via the Western Hwy.
BTW it can be printed via the print symbol top right of map.
thanks guys I'm driving a 25ft mobile home someone told that it would only take 4 to 5 days at the most and travelling about 80or 90 kms and driving approx 4 to 5 hrs no night driving sound like i've been miss informed.
Melbourne to Perth for truckies is 40hrs I am let to believe. I do it in about that time. Now break that down into hrs you need to travel a day. At 5 hrs a day thats 8 days. I always go the western highway but via the barrossa so I miss Adelade any way. Get yourself a GPS if you havnt got one it makes city driving so much more pleasant. cheers blaze

Yes you have been "mis informed" if you gave your adviser the above information.
At your maximums, ie 90km/hr for 5 hours per day, you are looking at around 8 days to do the trip. At your minimums, ie 80km/hr for 4 hours per day, you are looking at around 10days.
This is off course assuming that your land travel is starting from Melbourne, a 3500km trip, which you as yet you have not confirmed.
Ditto all the above advice.... It's a very long drive and you'll probably need a break along the way. Also allow time to rest on your arrival before your commitment there.
It is a long drive, but can be done, if you are prepared to spend much of the daylight hours on the road. Do you have a co-driver to help? We once towed the van from near Port Hedland, home to Melbourne, in 6 days - but they were long ones (we don't drive after about 5pm, but do get going just after sunup). There were two of us to drive, though I only did short sections while The Driver nanny-napped. If I reverse our route on that trip, the relevant stages were: Melbourne - Ouyen; Ouyen - Peterborough; Peterborough - Nundroo RH; Nundroo - Balladonia RH; as we came down from Leonora through Kalgoorlie this section is only of part relevance to you, but from Balladonia you could get part-way between Kalgoorlie and perth, then have an easier final leg to Perth. You would not have time for any sightseeing and at that time of year it could be very hot across the Nullarbor. On that trip of ours, we were trying to get home for Xmas and on the Nullarbor had temps close to 50 degrees outside. I strongly suggest you go via Mildura, Burra, Peterborough, to Port Augusta. This avoids Adelaide, with its steep run down the hills and built-up areas.
Noels , I would be Leaving Melb on 12th if you want to do those hrs . As somebody mentioned , Truckies do it in 40hrs , that s 40hrs driving @ 100k . That's All the way on the open road . Don't forget truck cam in SA Say he has 14 , 14 ,12 . Thats 3 full days . If you can do 5-6hrs most days & an occasional 7hrs . Consider - I would put in My 1st couple of days , the longest I could manage . Being on a "Mission" rather than sight seeing . I would go Ballarat - Murray Bridge - Adel - Port Augusta , Ceduna etc . I would say ,you have a 'more modern' vehicle if you can sit on 90 , it would have an exhaust or engine brake , USE It on downhills , if you go thru Adel it will Not take you long to skip from the bottom of Adel hills to Pt Wakefield Rd . I do it that way in just on 10& a half hours , in a B Double . Mildura take 12&ahalf-plus. Why do I go that way - quicker , flatter , Less fuel , even thru Adel . Whichever way you go I hope you have a Great & SAFE trip . Richo
A couple of years ago we were chatting to a couple from Wollongong at Litchfield NP who were on 3 weeks holiday. They had shared the driving non-stop for 32 hours from Wollongong to Alice Springs!!
Hi guys not left yet a delay in W.A,leaving on sunday from tassie dont have to be there till 3/3/11 for treatment on the 4/3/. Will let you how we are doing.
Be prepared for head winds on the Nullarbor. If you're lucky you'll get a SE tail wind, but it certainly is a factor in your pace and fuel consumption. Safe travels however you go.
