Not permitted in residential areas, but in a friends yard for a couple of days usually doesn't raise any eyebrows. Not a problem on Rural land providing it's not specifically banned by the local council. However the owner can not charge a fee unless it's a registered camp ground or caravan park etc. and carries the appropriate permits and public liability insurance coverage. Cheers, ozjohn.

Or some farmer friends who might let you stay in a corner of their paddock. I know that is what they do over in NZ. My brother has a campervan and they have get togethers all over the country. A group will get together in a known farmers paddock for a long weekend or a week depending on where they are. I'm sure they must do something similiar here.
Will probably end up at Sheep Yard Flats near Mansfield, but it gets so crowded there and you have to put up with other people's bad habits, like screaming kids and loud music.
Freeburgh caravan park has a huge unpowered area we [15 adults and 5 kids] stayed at over xmas the ovens river runs adjacent to park camp fires allowed ,pet friendly and the people running the park are the easiest to get along with we have come across. The park is 12kms out of bright towards Harrietiville. They have a website Freeburgh Caravan and holiday park. Cheers cheryl
