I have been watching most of the day on channel 24. It is a tragedy, so much damage and multiple deaths. I actually sat and cried at one stage watching it all. I don't have any family there as I'm from the North Island, hope everyone still alive copes with it. have seen some very traumatised people.
My neice is a doctor at the Christchurch hospital and when the quake hit she fell over and a computer fell off the desk and hit her on the head, She's OK though, supposed to be getting married in Christchurch in early March, hopefully. My sister and her husband live in Hamilton on the North Island.
May God help them all in Christchurch, they need it.

Been on most Channels nearly since the beginning this morning. Just hope the death toll doesn't go too much higher. No more would be the best outcome, but I can't really see it.
Friends have a daughter in the building she phoned them to tell them that she was still in the building they have been ringing her since then but no contact so we are all hoping she will be fine our thoughts are with all over there who are in need at this time. Helena.
God bless the People of Christchurch and surrounding areas. Terrible tragedy. I like Marge burst into tears watching and listening, I am from Napier NZ but did live in Christchurch for a year when I was younger, such a beautiful city. The Cathedral has gone, this was a beautiful building. I pray for the people who have lost loved ones and for all New Zealanders. Stay strong people. Kia Kaha.
very sad news ,goodness its scary whats going onin the world these days makes you wonder how much longer our dear earth can take the way its treated i too lived in nz for a while when i was fifteen on the north island in a tiny place called silverdale north of auckland then when i was 19 i lived in a gorgeous town called Nungaru nothing there some holiday a frame houses which i lived in and cleaned ,tutakaka up the road was a lovely spot though.
My sister is still over there she lives on at redbeach north island im glad shes safe but i do know she would have friends who live in the areas that were affected and worked there too.
Many of my "out-laws", formerly inlaws, live in Christchurch. I've climbed the bell tower of the Cathedral to enjoy the magnificent view of the Canterbury Plains. My family tells me everyone in the family is ok at this stage. All we can do is feel for them. I also have shed tears watching the trauma on the faces of those who have escaped from crumbled buildings. Nature can be so cruel! We can't plan or prepare for disasters of this magnitude. All anyone can do is pick up the pieces in so many ways, after the event

Yes C G, that's is what will happen, Christchurch will pick up the pieces and rebuild bigger and better, stronger than before, shame about the old buildings tho. The people will mourn their losses. Life moves on regardless.
It's believed the Sept earthquake weakened some of the buildings which crumbled this week. They have building standards, but like the Cathedral they hadn't been renovated to those standards. I guess the engineers and builders will review their standards and rebuild to a higher standard. Earthquakes may be like cyclones - they can only build to a known standard and then hope to hell their standards are never tested.
