Hello to all the happy vanners. We are headed down to Melbourne in April to order our van. Will be gong to a few places down here to check out a few manufacturers. We always stay in cabins in the caravan parks and could use some feedback on a good park near Melbourne that would be a good base. First for business and then for sightseeing. cheers Ann

Roddam, as for sight seeing that varies alot from one person to another so the its a wide field. The caravan builders, most are within a ten kls radius from what I have seen when down there, The Apollo Gardens tourist Park, 284-290 Hume Hwy Craigieburn .3064 PH 1800886352. was a good park when we were there last year & is a good location to the car/van builders as we had a look at quite a few .Most are within 10 mins drive & the park is on a main rd which runs through the industrial area where they all are. The park also had a free map of the area showing all the builders & locations, sounds like thats where every one heads to. Happy hunting.
Oops, that throws a huge spanner in my plans if that park closes, I was heading there in the 2nd. week of March. Anyone recommend a park outside Melbourne busy areas, not too keen on driving around a city with a van and not knowing where I'm going
Bother!!! Was going to stay at Apollo Gardens when we head down that way beore heading over to Tassie - now we have to find another park also close to Melbourne.

I have stayed twice at the Werribee South Caravan Park down on Beach Road, Werribee South. Not a bad park clean and friendly.
It is adjacent to the Werribee River which is used for swimming and fishing, and is located only 30 minutes from Melbourne central. It is serviced by public transport into the township of Werribee and further afield to the city of Melbourne.
It is only a 30 minute drive from the Spirit of Tasmania Ferry Terminal and offers late checkout when available at no charge.
You need to book before you arrive.
However, if you are looking for vans etc in the north of Melbourne it is probably at the wrong end. But then again it is not far to northern suburbs via the Western Ring Road.
Cheers John

Theres a couple of large caravan places on or near Springvale Rd Which is SE of the city. We havent stayed there, but theres caravan parks nearby at Springvale and Dandenong, also Frankston, & Chelsea (both on the coast). I suggest you study you map carefully to find where you need to be then choose a park. You might find some motels will be cheaper than cabins so near the city.
another update for Apollo Gardens: its open for caravans until the 20th March 2011 and the cabins will close in June 2011, and they are very nice cabins.
