Plenty of free camps up here Helena , so you shouldn't have too many worries .
In June the ones along the coast could be pretty crowded because of the " Mexicans " from the south excaping the cold . The inland / outback routes are less crowded and ( I reckon ) just as much value . There's so much to see , and so much history in central and western Queensland .

Sorry, can't give you a direct answer as I rarely use roadside free camps, many other GNs do however. It does occur to me that a little bit of research may reveal some less crowded and less noisy sites a bit away from the main highway, especially the Bruce Highway.
Last year on my annual northerly migration I met a couple who like to overnight camp in gravel pits or "borrows" as they say that the hard flat ground is good for setting up on and they usually have the site to themselves. If travelling from SA you may be choosing inland routes where the freebies may be less crowded (and less noisy) and the parks less expensive, especially in smaller places where the GN dollar is very welcome.

Quite agree with previous posters, if you dont already have one, an investment in the new camps 6 will pay for itself in a few days. We are going away for June and July this year. Initially to Seaforth, near Mackay then probably back the inland route, utilising some of the free camps on the way back. There certainly are plenty out there.

Seems like there are quite a few of us heading to Qld this winter. Rob and I are too, loved it there last year. We are going to west, hope to stay at Isisford on the river, ($2 a night), might stop at Blackall, Council Park $5 a night, (no power) max of 2 or 3 nights. Meandarra $5 for 3 nights. There are some really good spots. Might see a few "Nomads" on our travels!
Thanks everyone we have been in Queensland for the last two years stayed at Meandarra what a wonderful little town just wondered how things would be with the floods as thought that the main priority would be getting the cities back to rights another spot was Neville Hewitt Weir.
Another great spot is Ravenshoe Qld, you stay at the railway yard for $2 no power and $5 with power, you may have to wait a couple of days for a power site, there are showers, you will need to pay for a key from the caretaker.
If you time your arrival for a Sunday you can ride the train on Sunday arvo.
TWO loacl supermarkets for you to stock up supplies.
We found this place a few years ago and always go back there when in the area, on our first visit we planned to stay 3 days nad ended up staying 13 days.
Friday night you can catch a local bus to the go;f club for a meal, or walk to the bowling club for a meal.

You will enjoy
Will check this one out too Wombat, sounds good. We are so looking forward to moving off. First stop over Qld border will be Nindigully Pub for a night or two then over to St George - Surat and follow our noses!
oh if you go to ravenshoe go the pub not the one on the corner on the right hand side its onthe other corner on the left hand side that is coming from cairns way and try the lamb shanks ,its themost amazing meal, the guy does them for six hours and served with beans, mash, pumpkin, and a small slice of some sort of egg lasange sorta thing with vegies in it.
and a piece of corn cob was truly an amazing meal, dining room out back go thru the front bar ,order at the bar and go out back cute location we then drove to some place that was supposed to be a inot hot spring, but it seemed you had to pay to get in ? after telling our car hire guy about it , he said you shoulda just walked down to the little bridge before it and the water is warm there.

Just a word of warning Val N Rob, if you decide to have a meal at the pub and you order the mixed grill..........ONLY ORDER ONE..........There is enough on there for both of you and the dog.
Nindygully is a great place and the breakfast is the same as the meal ONLY ORDER ONE.
Enjoy it. We certainly intend going back there next time we are up that way.
Just wondering what the free camp sites in Queensland will be like in June will still go anyway but can't afford caravan parks all the time. Helena.
Nice place I just thought of was the weir just out of Monto, free camp $1 showers no time limit, met people there who had been there for 6 weeks last year and into their second week this year. Another in that area is Wuruma Dam - We spent 10 days there in early Dec just before the floods - free no time limit and lovely, (the dam is full now). Nice overnight is Cerotodus, on the upper Burnett, hell stay a couple of days. Not much traffic on the roads out there to keep you awake at night, unlike the Bruce. All of these are in Camps 4. Just go and enjoy. cheers
