We have found in some places we have stayed that fellow travellers like to camp rather close to us, well,....it may be they park close to others as well but i tend to think that we are such lovable people that it's a complete pleasure to bask in the glow of just being near us. This is especially true of european travellers. We once saw a motorhome in an open field in bendeela NSW park parallel to & less than a car width from the only other caravan on the whole field.
At the C/P we're at now the sites can fit a caravan plus rolled out awning & even the car all in a row but, when it's just a campervan or tent guess where most times they choose to put it? At the moment on the oposite side to the door side we have what we think maybe a french couple with a small tent which they at least, put in the middle of their site, but, since our caravan does admittedly, in the afternoon, provide a nice bit of shade for the resourcful type, we now find them using the side of our van as a shady head rest when seated at their table below our window. If only they had a nice bottle of french bubbly on the table then I could dangle a line out of the kitchen window & snag it.
Cheers Jon

Yes Jon, we know what you mean. A couple years ago we parked in a free camp mid afternoon, down in the corner by ourselves. There were only a couple other vans on the whole place.
Blow me a wizz-bang parked right behind us with barely room to walk between us.
Lynne and a friend were sitting under the awning at the time and were too polite to say anything....well by the time I got back to the van they had steps and chairs out ready to settle in.
I was very calm, didn't say a word, just got Genny out of the ute and put it just over the fence we were parked alongside, between them and us an arms length away.
Within 5 minutes of starting it they had rolled up their mat, packed the chairs and moved further up the campground. . Then I turned it off, didn't need it in that camp.
Cheers Neil

We parkes at the Boab Tree free camp one night. Two motorhomes travelling together parked off in a corner out of the road. We parked well away from them as there was a lot of room. A WizzBang come in, backed right up to the back of their home, where the beds were and settled in. There was no room to walk between the two.
These visitors spoke loudly all night and he had nasal issues. I felt so sorry for the motorhome couple, they were mortified by the grose noises but way to polite to complaing.
We had it once as well, in an unpowered area, a tent set up so close there was little room to pass between. The other side of them there was no one for about ten sites.
I don't know wether it is insecurity or what but it is slightly off putting.
We have used the genny trick a few times, works like a charm.

Not all "Wizz-bangs" are the same guys. Personally, I hate being parked close to other people, which is why I freecamp [well the main reason] anyway.
The only time I park near others, is if it's getting too late in the afternoon, and I'm getting too tired to go any further. Wouldn't be safe to go on.
And once I've closed the door for the night, I'm organised so that I don't need to open it 'til morning.
Cheers, Sheba.

In free camps maybe they take the meaning of - camp safely - near other campers -literally! Or maybe they expect heaps more people to come and camp as well - we were in Tom Price once - they had opened a new section of the campground and a new toilet/shower/laundry block - we were tired and went to sleep reasonably early - woken at 2 am by the washing machines going full bore, dryers rumbling away, toilets flushing, showers running, people talking and walking around - went out to go to loo - and what had been an almost empty new section when we went to bed - was jam packed - no more sleep that night - and of course the showers and toilets were in dire need of a clean, and hot water was just warm.
Understand that washing has to be done - but maybe a little bit of consideration would have been nice - we were in camper trailer at the timel.

How close are mine - well my northern neighbour is 600yds , the southern ones are 5ks , the western ones 5ooyds & the eastern ones could be Sth America there is a lot of bush . I like a bit of space . I spose I could Never live in town again . I like that , nearly close to being feral , just don't visit when Herself is being herself with nothing on Richo
Sorry Sheba, didn't mean it to sound like that mate. Its the best way to describe this type of vehicle so everyone knows what I am talking about. And it sure wasn't the door that night that was the worry.

For normal living at a base, I love the way I lived on Cape York. Nearest neighbours a few hours drive away. 8 hours if you had to walk it. Never saw anyone for months on end, and when visitors did arrive, you enjoyed the interaction, but were glad when they left.

No worries Firefly. Campervan has a couple of interpretations, so I guess your description is the best one in this case.
Cheers, Sheba.

Campervan is very confusing Sheba, introduced myself to a new neighbour the other day. Said I had just bought a Campervan. She said "Oh we could have sold you ours" Their's is a caravan with the pop top. I know a lot of people call them the same but I had pointed to mine which was nothing like theirs.

I know what you mean Marj. In my opinion, there are Pop-top Caravans, Campervans [like ours], and Camper Trailers.
A lot of people lump them all under "Campervan." Maybe I'm wierd, [ I am in a way, I'll admit] but to me, there is a big difference between all three.
Most parks lock the laundry overnight. Or they turn the power off until 0800hrs. The mining towns like Tom Price might be different, but I stayed there and didn't have problem, but we were away from the mine camp end. Sometimes I think there is more space in a van park where everyone is allocated their space. I always respect my neighbours' space bearing in mind we live fah-ting distance apart.

Camper trailer is also a confusing term. it can mean the style like jaycos where you wind up the roof and push beds out the ends or like ours which is a 7x5 trailer with a fold out tent on top.
I usually say I have a tent style camper trailer when making bookings.
When we were next to the dam in Mitchell a big motorhome parked right at the back of the van, acres of vacant land to park in. Turned out they were new to free camping and liked the security of being close to someone.
Over drinks that night explained to them that free campers liked their own space and you didn't need to be on top of someone else to feel secure.
don't know if they took our advice as we haven't run accross them again.
I was wondering what a 'wizz-bang' was. Now I know.
The worst I found was The Waterhole, out of Longreach. It looked like a used Motorhome sales lot! All parked up beside each other in rows! I wanted to park higgle-tee piggle-tee (not in my spell check) just to rattle them, but my friends didn't want to buck the system!
Edited for spelling of wizz-bang.

As far as I'm concerned jaycos where you wind up the roof and push beds out .are not campertrailers they are wind ups....what Beth has is a CT.....like Pam...our 7x5 is a campertrailer.......Easterners call them tent trailers

Yes, I call it a camper trailer..or a 'little tiny camper trailer' or 'bed on wheels'.
I had noticed, when I was looking to buy something, that they come with all sorts of monikers though. If you put 'campervan' into some vehicle purchase sites, all sorts of things come up.
So what is my A'van classed as?, I've always called it a camper trailer but the man at the park I'm at at the moment says its a fold up caravan !!!!!!!! go figure
