Goulburn to Alice Springs where to stay?

It's many years since I went this way, but depending on your vehicle, the Oodnadatta Track is worth a detour off the bitumen. Very interesting, historically. We camped behind the pub at William Creek. It was excellant! Other than that, we free camped.

Will be sticking to the black stuff. My vehicle is 4x4 but the van is old, it has enough trouble on my driveway........... Working roughly on the Km's, I think I would be around Darlington Point, Mildura, Port Pierie, Woomera, Coober Pedy, Ghan then Alice.

Any where around these spots you can recommend??

No, sorry can't help you with that one.

We came down from Alice on the Oodnadatta Track to Marree, then up the Birdsville Track. We were on a schedule, so that's all I've seen of SA unfortunitely.

Allara, I would suggest you stick to C.P's travelling up through the centre, not free camping. Not sure about dog friendly parks. In Alice the only park with dogs is Heritage or you can camp at the Hall of Transport Museum in exchange for some volunteer work each day. Temple Bar C.P is also dog friendly but a bit out of town and fairly run down.

Hi Allara, I spent a lot of my childhood at Darlington Point and surrounding areas. Went through a little while ago and it seems much the same. I think you would be able to free camp down near the river. (Murrumbidgee) Its an old country town and I think it would be quite safe.

There is a very pleasant caravan park at Gol Gol, just out of Mildura, that allows dogs.
When we go west or north west, after Mildura, we usually go via Renmark, Morgan, Burra, Peterborough, Orroroo, Port Augusta. After overnighting at Gol Gol, next night is Peterborough - we like the CP there and it takes dogs.

I will look at Gol Gol and Peterborough (haven't thought of there before) as well as Darlington Point, Alice will be OK as I will be at the dog showgrounds with the other competitors.
Do you know of CP's north of Pt Augusta that would be OK? .............. bit warey of free camping 'up the middle' not quite that brave.

I did a bit of freee camping in a swag up the middle, I normally used a council gravel dump and drove to the off road side of the gravel heap,

Hi Allara, that's a big trip you have in front of you!

Could I suggest the Wilmington bush camp, SA, very cheap ( search button will have info for most of the posts here.) if it fits into your daily travel distances. Lovely area and we noticed area's where one could free camp. Fuel there was same price as Port Augusta in Nov 2010(perhaps a forum member has more upto date figures?)this would allow you to bypass PA if needed.

Further North we found numerous area's to freecamp but most are highway stopovers (noisy but may offer you some sense of security?)

On leaving Port Augusta please avoid SPUDS fuel at Pimba, they were 10c lt dearer than Woomera, or continue on to BP at Glendambo who were also 10c lt cheaper.

Dont get caught out like we did at the border quarantine station for fruit, veg and nuts cry

Agree with ozi2 about SPUDS and the petrol at Glendambo. Cadney homestead 150 km north of Coober Pedy is a pleasant stop. Very friendly, great food, and lovely clean c.p. Lots of truckies stop here so that's always a good sign.

In the Clare Valley, as well as Willmington, there is a lovely town north of Clare called Yacka. Lovely little community park with power. In Camps book. Was $10 for power. All fenced and dog friendly. We will be returning to this one.

We are on our travels around oz for the next 12 months and at the moment we are in Townsville. We are heading to the West next week and I throught I would say hello darling.

How many dogs (kids) are you taking on your show trip, is there any chance that you can come away with a couple of trophy's.

Hi Allara, my husband and I travelled right up through the Territory in 2005 in a camper trailer, and when we were in Tennant Creek we stayed at the Outback Caravan Park. It's very comfortable, has a great camp kitchen, and I think I remember seeing dogs there. It's very safe as the Park is patrolled by the police at night. I remember flagging down one of the police patrol cars - just so I could get a photo of a NT police officer and his navy blue patrol car. He was very obliging too.

Howdy everyone,
I have been gadding about lately and not been able to check out my replies. I am gratefull for your input, specially about SPUDS, need every dollar I can save at the moment. Have been to the steel shop and had them cut up the steel to make a frame to hold my dog crates, just need a welding type person to put it together for me.
One of my dogs has puppies and they will be just old enough to go to their new homes before I leave. Will post a photo. I am taking all the dogs, 5 of them, with me and they are already lobbying for the front seat!

Forgot to ask if anyone knows where I can camp at Darwin. There doesn't seem to be anywhere, within coo-ee that take dogs. Anywhere would be OK.

re Darwin - have visited there several times, most recently Feb, but not with dog. I seem to recollect a showgrounds type of arrangement by the Stuart Highway, where there were motor homes camped. Presume they had dogs. I think it was in the vicinity of Winellie/Berrimah. If it is open to the public, and takes dogs, would be very conveniently placed.

From Goulburn to Alice Springs should create any problems, but there is only one Dog Friendly Park in Alice Springs.
It's the 'Alice Springs Heritage Tourist Park' (OZ Parks).
As June is at the height of the busy tourist season I suggest you book ahead as all parks will be chock-a-block.
There is another dog friendly park quite someway out of town.
