Can see your point beth and ozjohn, could be open to all sorts of rogues. In my case with supercheap auto, when I asked why I couldn't be given cash back as it was cash out of my bank account, not cc. They said no it had to go back into my bank account or anyone could pick up dockets outside the door and try the same thing. They also remembered selling me the mirrors only 2 days before.
We were allowed to give cash if it was sold on debit, but not if credit. In general, large retailers will refund with a receipt.
Small stores try to tell you they don't refund, and can even have a sign out to say so. But that's illegal. They HAVE to give a refund, with receipt, for faulty goods. Or with no receipt, a replacement or exchange for similar goods, if they no longer stock that item. And with goods that you've simply changed your mind about, they are under no obigation to refund or exchange. Best to ask when you purchase something.
I'll get off my refund soapbox now.
Oh, and Marj, people can't simply pick up a docket and get the cash. You have to produce your card for the refund. I don't think they HAVE to give a cash refund on a debit purchase though.
