Hi everyone, thanks for your input, much appreciated.
If the house had sold, we would be on our way full time now and wouldn't have to worry about getting back but Pat has to go back to work.
going to put it back on the market in a couple of months and try again but in the meantime, thought we would take a little trip and get the taste. sort of a reconnaissance trip.
Hi Delliemay, we were planning on going Mount Isa and Tennant Creek, don't know whether Winton - Boulia road would be possible with a fifth wheeler, maybe you could advise.
Once again, thanks to everyone, hope to see you out there.
Seem's as if a lot of us are having to put our trips on hold this year I know we have had to ill health being the problem for a while but hope to be up and running (should say motoring) in the not too distant future will only be able to do trips in our own state this year though can't wait Helena.
Hi Stan747...Take a little trip and get a big taste. It's just great. If you were to go via Winton, Boulia...the 5th wheeler would be fine. Single lane bitumen between them, but flat and ok. Would'nt take it over the Plenty tho. The road from Boulia up to Mt Isa is just fine also. Bitumen all the way. Enjoy it as it's beautiful country out there. Lovely c/p at Boulia. Cheers Dellie
There's some scenic "breakaway" country about mid-way between Winton and Boulia. There's a lookout there but not sure if the access is 5th wheel friendly or not. Some other "forumster" may have an update on that.
Agree with Dellie's comment on the Plenty. It's very stony and a reel tyre killer, especially if the tyres are not top quality and/or over-inflated. Normal highway pressures would be over-inflated for these conditions. I busted a rear window on the Plenty several years ago from a stone bouncing back off the trailer.
Thanks Delliemay and Jimricho, I think we'll take your tips, Pat says if it takes a couple of weeks more and we enjoy ourselves then bugger the work, they will have to wait for her.
Hope ther're not reading this.
We leave on the 1st June, see some of you out there I hope.
Enjoy it guys... No way could you take the 5th wheeler up the lookout Stan. It's only a short walk for you two tho, and well worth the effort. A "must do" is stop at the Middleton pub halfway between Winton/Boulia. History of that place is great. Pats got the right idea... bugger the work. One tip to remember... it gets VERY cold out there at this time of year, so be prepared!! Let us all know what you are up too. Cheers Dellie. PS We only live in Hervey Bay you know
Don't cut yourself short of time in the Alice Springs - Macdonnell Ranges area, there's much to see and do, especially as you intend doing Uluru, Olgas, Kings Canyon etc. You may reconsider the loop via Boulia to allow yourself time in the Centre.
Hermannsburg - Palm Valley can be done as a day trip from Alice without the 5th wheel as you'll need the 4WD to get into Palm Valley. Both the "G'Day Mate" and Macdonnell Range (Big4) caravan parks are located on the southern side of Alice at Heavitree Gap and within walking distance of the Heavitree Tavern for a bistro and a coldie. I've stayed at the Outback Caravan Park in T.C. about 10 years ago and was ok. It's off the main highway on the eastern side of town on the Peko Road.
I wouldn't recommend free camping at Alice or TC but further away from town may be ok, others may have better info on that. I believe Devils Marbles gets crowded, may need to be in early to get a spot, again others may have more info.
If you go out to Glen Helen Gorge you'll see Mt Sonder. This is the subject of one of Albert Namatjira's best known works. If you see it in the early morning you'll see the beautiful colours that A. N. captured so faithfully. There are powered sites available at the Glen Helen resort.
