We are now in Katherine and had a wonderful gorge cruise yesterday! Spectacular isn't good enough. We are looking at pulling up at ****burn rest area. Any info on it and in particular if it would be suitable to leave the van there for the day while we go to Wyndham.
Not too sure where that rest area is but if it is near Katherine then you have a big drive to Wyndam for a day trip.
I wouldn't leave a van anywhere up that way unattended. If you find there are other nomads parked up for the period you will be away & they are prepared to keep an eye on your stuff then you will be fine.

Chappy, Be very very careful up there. Katherine is one of the few places that I have ever stuck trouble, I still love the place, but take a little extra care.
Thanks Jonathan for the info we are at the Shady Lane park and have been for a few days. Hitting the track tomorrow did you think it was worth staying in Victoria river or Timber creek more than ovenight. We won't be going fishing. Cheers Trish & Terry
Chappy we stayed in Timber Creek last year and the locals did a run through late at night. We didn't hear any reports of anyone having damage but it wasn't pleasant. They may have them under control again now.
Victoria River looked really good when we pulled up there for a drink and the ammenities were nice and clean as well.

My suggestion (for what it's worth) would be to go to Kunnunurra and stay there in a caravan park. You can do a day trip to Wyndham from there as well as a trip to Lake Argyll and a boat trip down the Ord River which is every bit as awesome as Katherine Gorge. You can do this as a package trip, bus to the dam, boat trip return, pickup/drop off from the park.
The money you save by free camping isn't worth the risk in that area if you need to leave your rig unattended.
P.S. you can also do a day trip from there out to the Pentecost River and the "asterisk, asterisk, asterisk, asterisk, burn" Range

Make sure you book into a park though mate. Last year we weren't wanting to free camp, we were in a tent and we couldn't get a spot in a park anywhere there at all. Ended up camping at the NT/WA border rest area for the night.

I spent last night at Timber creek .. had 'happy hour' earlier there with fellow radio club members .. up on the scenic lookout .. at sunset .. was great !
was the only 'camper' up there and had no visitors at all overnight ..
Nice place to visit but I couldn't stay more than for a couple of days .. see the old Police station .. and general sight-seeing .. arrange a trip on the River to see some local crocs etc ..
If you are able to survive a night or two away from 240v power, really suggest you have a look at Keep River NP. Very scenic. Excellent short walk from the first camp area. Much prefer the caravan park at Victoria River RH, to those at Timber Creek. Only reason to stay at Timber Ck is to do the boat trip on the river. Advise you stay at Kununurra and do day trip to Wyndham, Parry Creek Lagoon etc. Quite a bit to do in Kununurra and a pleasant enough town, in daylight at least.
I agree with Wendy... C/P in Kununurra, and day trip to Wyndham. Terrific road, only an hours drive. Look for locals selling carved emu eggs. Very, very good, and you know they "wern't" made in China. Stay safe Cheers Dellie
Thanks all for info. Currently in Kimberelyland c/p Kununarra. Staying for 4 nights and doing the day trips. If anyone misses going to Lake Argyle it would be a shame. It is really beautiful! Had a sunset cruise and went for a swim off the boat. Not many travellers at all. The spillway creek is running a bumper and just sitting off the bridge watching the fish and crocs and birds was so good. We wanted to see some great places and that is one of the best.
