Hi has anyone spent any time in Northam W.A, looks like we have landed a house sit there next year and would love to hear from anyone that has been there. Would it be the type of place you could spend 6 months, checked out the camps books etc but would like to hear peoples opinions on the area, Cheers
The town didn't look too bad around December last year, very neat and tidy streets and a river through the middle of the town with nice picnic spots. In one of the carparks they have power posts for any RV's parking there during the day so they can keep their fridges on power.
I visited the caravan park too for a look (cleared it with the office), the best building in there was a new office and the lady running it seemed quite nice and friendly. The campers kitchen didn't look too bad, did notice that they had a number of permanents there too. The showers and toilets weren't modern but were clean and tidy.

Northam has a reasonable shopping centre with both Coles and Woolies . It is only an hour or so from Perth. Close enough that you can do day trips. also close by is York,Beverley and Toodyay. Usually around March there is a Vintage Car Race around the town centre, Some very old cars on display and the owners will talk your ears off about their cars if you are interested. There is also a hillclimb and autokhana for more modern cars. August is usually the white Water Race (Avon Descent) from Northam to Perth. Local ag show in september. If you are into arts and crafts there is a good craft group that welcomes visitors.Plenty of Sporting activities as well. Have never stayed at the caravan park so can't comment on that but it is out of town. (friend has a big back yard there so we park there!!)

Heritage Step back in time to explore Northams historic buildings on the historic town walk, visit Morby Cottage 1836 or the Old Railway Station Museum 1886. Agriculture in Northam first developed around 1836 as the early settlers searched for new pastures in the fertile Avon Valley. Northam grew into a substantial town in the 1890s after it was chosen as the point of departure for the railway line to the Goldfields in 1891. The Northam Migrant Camps Photographic Exhibition at the Northam Visitor Centre tells the story of European Migration to Northam in the 1950s.
Commerce Northam is the commercial hub of the agricultural region of the Avon Valley and offers excellent facilities including banks, supermarkets, car repairs, accommodation, restaurants, shopping and modern medical facilities. Enjoy a meal and a drink at a local hotel or tavern, relax at a café or have a picnic at Bernard Park on the banks of the Avon River.
Lifestyle Activities in the local area include archery, aviation, cycling, equestrian and hot air ballooning. Relax at a local winery, enjoy wildflowers in spring and Concerts in the Park in summer. Highlights of the events calendar include The Flying 50 in April, The Avon Descent in August and the Northam Agricultural Show in September.
Colsa, it depends which six months. Northam's OK, but I have strong memories of cadet camps there in the winter in the late 1950s-early1960s. We wore ALL our uniforms to bed, including greatcoats. It gets bloody cold! Cheers, Tony
