Could someone please explain to me the definition of "General Subjects".
I have always been under the impression that general ment any topic that someone found interesting, could be posted and discused on a general forum, be it a current topic, a photo,a health issue or any other subject that a person would like to discuss in this type of forum. there are other forums for spacific issues and these cover a wide range of topics, but a general forum should be for all topics.
I agree and it covers a wide range, but no matter what you say ie. if you say something funny you will get a comment it should be in joke section, if you vaguely mention something about health some smartarse will come on and say it should be in health and medical, etc. etc. etc.
You cant please every one and frankly I don't even try.

A lot only read the general forum and don 't bother about the other topics, which is a shame as there is some good ones down there. Not much point having them if the topics aren't divided to where they should go. Just have one big TOPIC..
I agree - general is "general" - i.e. anything and everything - the other sections, i.e. tech support etc., make for good reading, but occasionally we all need some specific answers, as Marj says - read the other forums on here - some really interesting stuff on there - I personally read all sections, just to see what is happening there.

Hmmmm.......I must admit I generally (no pun intended) read the General section, however I would guess that the General section is meant for anything not covered in the sub sections.
Probably because if somone wanted to check say a Tech Problem that others may have an answer for or info etc, they don't have to wade through a lot of other topics to find what they are looking for, but courses for horses, whatever people feel most comfortable with, I don't have a problem reading a post wherever it is.
One thing I would like to see is topics coming back to the top again when someone posts on them otherwise they get buried before we all get to view them and we have to do a search of previous pages to see what we have missed if we have been away for awhile......Anyway, I am grateful we have a free forum whichever way the Webmaster (mistress) wants to run it, so a small matter to contend with.

I totaly agree with that H W, but there are times when someone may have a question or is looking for a certain piece of info that maybe should be in spacific forums and they think they would get more answers on the general page, I personally dont see anything wrong with that.
Vic, put your settings onto Last modified and they will come back to the top when a new post is posted. Thats what I have so only ever come on to the first page, anything on subsequent pages I have already read.
I have been quite surprised when people has said "Oh, I only read the general section" They are missing out on a lot of informative discussions.
Fair comments, everybody. The various sections have been added to the forum generally at the request of a member or members. The basic idea is that it will be easier for people seeking information about a specific area to find what they are looking for more efficiently. This has become even more important recently as the number of forum members and the number of posts have both risen sharply. That, of course, is fantastic to see but it does make it even more important that the forum itself is easily navigable. I have been really delighted to see how well used each of the various sections has been, and they are all very much ‘active’. I take the point that people wanting to maximise the amount of eyes reading a post will be tempted to post in the ‘general’ section as the perceptionis that more people browse in that area. That may well be the case but I do think everyone interested in finding a joke at a particular time will look at the jokes section, and that solo travelers will always stay updated with the latest topics in the ‘solos’ section etc etc.I hope also that many will enjoy reading all sections. I would just like to reassure everyone that we are trying to make the site as a whole, and the forum in particular, as user-friendly as possible.I don’t think anyone – certainly not me - is going to jump up and down if a post is put in ‘general’ that could have gone elsewhere but we hope that if people use the ‘system’ it will make it easier for everybody to find the posts they are interested in. As I said, as the number of posts grows, it becomes more challenging in a very nice way to keep everything accessible. The ‘Search’ button as the top of the forum pages can be a great help in finding posts on certain topics. Vic, I take your point about setting things up so that when a new post is added it brings the string up at the top. The current ‘default setting’ doesn’tmake that happen automatically. I took the view that it was better for people to organise how they viewed things themselves as I know some people get upset when posts jump up or down and they‘lose their bearings’. Thanks Happy Wanderer for pointing out that we can all choose to go into ‘User Profile’ and then ‘Settngs’ and then check ‘Last Modified’ to ensure that new posts bring a subject to the top of the page. I will, perhaps publicise this facility better so everyone knows their options. Anyway, thanks again everybody. I always appreciate getting feedback – good or bad – on the site and the forum, and I am always trying to improve things when I can. Please feel free to private message me or email me at any time to make suggestions or comments. I am just delighted that everyone seems to enjoy themselves so much here. That, above all else, is what I want.
I commend the Webmaster (Cindy) for setting the forum up this way and for being responsive to member's suggestions. I like the Jokes section as gives us a bit of licence to be a bit more risque (and frivolous) than we would be on other sections.
The Recommendations and the Free/Budget Campsites sections are an excellent idea as a source of information and I personally see no problem with bringing up a campsite, Caravan park or mechanic in the general forum as a topic for discussion or a request for information and then adding that site/mechanic etc as a recommendation to the appropriate section where it's easily accessible for future reference.
I agree and it covers a wide range, but no matter what you say ie. if you say something funny you will get a comment it should be in joke section, if you vaguely mention something about health some smartarse will come on and say it should be in health and medical, etc. etc. etc.

I agree that it is good to have the forum split into different areas, HOWEVER if someone only looks at the general section they may miss out on information that they are interested in. For example Ma has suggested a get together in Adelaide but it appears that no one has seen it as get togethers are further down the list on the menu.

I do go into every subject when I see there has been a new post. It is easy to see as they are in darker print and have a tick beside them. How hard is it to scroll down and check all the subjects rather than the very first one. As the evening rolls by I will have done them all and replied if I can find something of interest to say. Off to check out the Newbie called Doylie.

Some forums have a "View new posts" link which, as the name suggests will list all new posts since your last visit. I find this most helpful as I cannot visit every forum every day and can keep track with this option.

Hi Vic, yep, I have always had mine set up that way, however the View New Posts button means you don't have to go to individual forums to see the latest, they all appear on one page.
Cheers Neil,
