RE: A Word of Warning to Single Lady Travellers

What about the free camping places that are always full of friendly people (I mean longer term camping not overnight roadside), are these a lot safer.  I've only had one problem and that was from a pest of man in a caravan park in Charters Towers.

I hadn't even thought about people trying to get free meals.......!

Cheers

Hi and welcome Campfire. Nice to see you here. I hope you enjoy your stay.
The "friendly" people will always weed out the unfriendly campers. It happens everywhere, in parks or free camping.
A few years ago I was free camping with someone I was travelling with, and as we approached another couple on the park they stood up, and walked away. Not so friendly.
It takes all kinds, and hopefully we are wiley judges of character to keep out of pending trouble.
I've never had a "pest of a man" bothering me. I don't know if I've been lucky or missing out. But I don't put up with w.nkers so maybe I cut the pests off at the pass before they get to bothering me.
We all have to be alert and aware of our surroundings and who is in the vicinity. Always be watchful. Watching people is one of my hobbies, and I can tell a lot about people by their mannerisms.

Me too CG, one glare from me and they would go running in the opposite direction.
I think I can judge fairly well, whether they are pests or just snobs as I found at the showgrounds in Narrabri. Walking over to the toilets, passed a group of 3 couples sitting in between their motorhomes. They all turned the other way as I walked past so thats what I did from there on in when I next went over.
Didn't give them the time of day.

We have to bear in mind there is a faction of snobbery between motor homers, campervanners and caravanners.
I don't entertain any snobbery, but believe me, it's certainly out there.
There's even snobbery between the big, flash caravans, and the smaller pop-top vans.
It really has the potential to spoil the experience, but I won't let it, and neither should you.

It doesn't matter how you get around does it, we are all doing the same thing, seeing this wonderful island.

Just because someone has something bigger than the next person doesn't mean that it is better.  Maybe it is for them but the other bloke is probably quite happy with his setup and that's all that matters.

If we make the most of our available resources and travel within our means it's a wonderful experience without stretching everything to the max.

Re: snobbery

I just want to say have come across this situation at numerous sites, being a single woman, some women seem to materalise when you are talking to the man. what do they think i am going to do, race their husbands off? Alls i am after most times is information on some tips for camping. If I wanted a man I wouldn't choose ones 'past their sell by date' not being unkind but over 70 is not my cup of tea.

RE: A Word of Warning to Single Lady Travellers

Hi,

I'm one of the "lurkers", not for any other reason than I subscribe to several forums and I don't like to stick my beak in too often.

However, on reading this, I just had to. Hasn't anyone been listening to all the warnings about Facebook and social networking sites? It's not just kids who get bullied. Adults are also the target of lowlifes. and women traveling alone who post their details and itinery are "low hanging fruit"!

You DON'T say ANYTHING that can identify you directly, nor leave your personal details exposed.

I deal with caravaners on a regular basis so I'm not unknown, but I still have security in place. And even with my security background, I've still had my credit card details stolen.

As for the security of people being stalked. Forget your manners! Report the matter immediatly!

You have the tight to feel safe and NOONE has the right to change that.

However, some will try and that's when you need a plan in place to deal with them.

Hope that helps,

Cheers, John.

Good point John. I'm on a couple of social sites and a couple of "mating" sites, mainly looking for like minded friends, not a wallet that shaves. That doesn't mean I'm a donut - something round and sweet with a hole in the middle.
I have also met some great friends through this forum. Those I trust get to know me, and it's a bit hard to be anonymous with my logo on my wheel covers.
But somehow I manage to maintain some anonymity, and I can still be selective when it comes to who I spend my time with.
I'm a pretty good judge of character, and while I try to be friendly, there are times when it's wiser to close the door.
The ratbags are the minority in my experience, and that's a good thing.
We can't live our lives being suspicious all the time. We just have to be aware of the good and bad among us, and choose wisely.

Good points John, regards personal security etc, suggest you remove your surname from your profile for the same reasons...

Hi Vic,

Like I said, I'm not unknown in the industry and I have "other" security in place. However, point taken, and acted upon.

No worries John, I suppose when your well known there's not much point, I haven't some across you personally......sorry about your plans being ruined by some stinkers, seems to happen a lot these days, nothing is sacred ! furious

I'm having a couple of battles myself lately with people I've dealt with, one victory not sure the other will be though, but I'm not going to lay down for them!  See how I go ! furious

No worries Vic, I really should practice what I preach, but so many people have my business contact details it's kinda pointless. I do however keep my private details secure, along with some (sometimes very annoying,) serious computer protection.

Having spent 20+ years in corporate security, covering everything from CPP (close personal protection) to biometrics DCCTV. I  s'pose I've seen a fair spread of crimes & criminals. Don't like 'm much.

Been out of security for a few years now and dealing with a much nicer group of folks in RV and solar lands. I intend to start the trips as soon as I get a decent motorhome built.

I know that representing Sunland in Vic, I should tow around a Patriot or a Blue Heeler....but that leaves me without my boat...and that just aint gunna happen!

Cheers, J.

Well, you certainly are selling a quality product that goes the extra mile to produce something that customers like. No compromise on integrity selling that brand..... biggrin
