We are in Esperance for a week. We are staying at Bathers Paradise Caravan Park,Castletown. Yesterday there were 2 whales swimming about 50 metres off the beach just in front of the park , they were there all day. Haven't been for a walk this morning so don't know if they are still there today. (Sorry,Didn't get a photo as the cameras were in the tug at the mechanics)
Truck started using about a litre of water a day so detoured down here to get it checked. Know a good mechanic down here. Should have it back on Friday.It needs a new head gasket. Not running hot,runs well etc but have bubbles in radiator (so lets get it fixed before there is damage done that is going to costs 3 arms ,a leg and our firstborn!!) ( AND I get to fight the 2 nannas for cuddles of our great nieces for a few days so all is good!!)
Were the whales southern rights or humpbacks? I'm guessing SR's. Just beautiful to watch as they play, loll around and then rest. I used to watch them as they came into Boston Bay at Pt. Lincoln on their way to the Head of The Bight where they'd give birth. A few weeks later they'd be back to show off the young one. The visit seemed to be personal. The whales would hang close to shore and the wharf. One year a youg humpback was caught out of it's terrain literally, in a tuna farm. Quite an operation to release it. No whales were injured in the adventure.

I really just don't understand this whole whale culture. I've seen them numerous times and have always thought...'ok just a big fish swimming'. Feel free to bash me, but those are my feelings.
I always feel at peace when I'm near whales. The largest creature on earth, eats one of the smallest creatures on earth, and poses not threat to anything or anyone except the krill. Boats get damaged because they get to close to the most placid creature. On a whale watching cruise out of Exmouth 2 came to the boat, cruised by, turned to look at us looking at them, with what appeared to be a knowing look. I love watching their behaviour. Size does matter.

That was a stroke of luck, the last time we were there there was a Sea Lion swimming near the jetty, apparently he can get pretty agro if any swimmers get near him. I think I saw somewhere he had been a frequent visitor but had gone?
We stayed at Bathers Paradise when we were there, but I thought they were going to close it, has it got new owners? The owners then were a black headed bloke and his wife/partner, a blonde, both appeared to be in their late forties.

On the boat we went on the whales came over to have a good look at us. One came out of the water right in front on me and like you CG the look in his eye was somethng I won't forget. I think he wanted to join us in the boat.
Sitting next to a wharf (Stanley) fishing in a 14 foot tinnie, people on the wharf sung out to watch out for the whales (took no notice, had my back to them, though they were giving me the get up), they sung out louder so I look around and I had 2 whales not ten foot from my dingy just diving to go under, barely a ripple on the water as the mother went under the boat and the calf went under my anchor rope. didnt know wether to jump out or what, had the camera but by the time I even thought about it they were gone. It was one of those moments in life that one never forgets, very moving. One extra flick of the tail I was a goner but it was all ever so gentle. cheers blaze
On a whale tour out of Hervey Bay once, a whale played with our boat, going backwards and forwards under the boat, turning on it side and looking us straight in the eye connecting with us, just magnificent, made me feel like a child experiencing something magic for the first time. It it something I will never forget, gives a very peaceful feeling... Cheers bronnie

Yes Bronnie, we did one of those, about 3 yrs ago, and still remeber how the whales came to us and played round our boat. Still one of the best days of our lives!!
I get the feeling they're as curious about us as we are about them. Just like dolphins, I always feel a connection with them when they're close. There's a pod of dolphins in the Port River and at North Arm one was just cruising up and down the wharf. Off Wattle Point on Yorke Pensinsula there's a pod of dolphins which cruise the beach in the arvo. Mum, dad and a couple of kids check out the swimmers whenever we were there. No sound except the spout. There doesn't seem to be an aggressive bone in their bodies. The tinny experience is an example. They don't want to harm us, but a beast so large could do it easily if it intended to.

Talking to a guy here in Albany yesterday who was out fishing in his 5.8 tinnie and he was fishing out the back of the boat and his jack russell was up the front keeping watch. He said that jack started barking and without looking kept telling the dog to shutup, he eventually turned around only to see a whale peering into the boat, he said it was there just watching for about 5 minutes cheers blaze
