The friends I was travelling with had rung to book in, and was told 'no need to book, there's plenty of room'. When we got there, there were only two powered sights left.
It was a small-ish fenced area at the back of the roadhouse but all the powered sites were tightly packed along the fenceline. It cost them $25, the toilet was only passable, and the showers were not even passable.
I didn't bother with power, so it only cost me $10 and I had enough room around me.
Beth, Where were you last July when we needed you? We had the misfortune of staying a night there. While the couple of powered sites were drive through for small to medium size vans larger rigs had to revese in from the road and park along the fence without power. We were luckier than most as we got one of the powered sites. It was level with lush green grass. As for the amenities, Hell would not adequately describe them. There was noway we would ever consider showering in them and the toilets were worse. This park (behind the Roadhouse) is a testament to complete and utter laziness and and lack of self esteme by the owners. In contrast the Mt Surprise Caravan Park (Further north) behind the servo is terrific. While looking a bit rough from outside there are no permanents, the sites well shaded drive through and the amenities are excellent.

Hi Beth and thank you for the post, it is this kind of health and wealth hazard that needs to be addressed. There most certainly is a health issue in places such as mentioned.........should we also be making our complaints to the local health officials as too many of these places have pathetic facilities not up to acceptable standards?
in some ways im so glad we got a bathroom with our motor home, nothing like your own loo and shower.. I do admit some times its a great place to find out local info but some places are just shocking..
Sorry ozjohn, I was further west in July last year.
There are a couple of other free camps south of The Lynd that would have been better in hindsight. Fletcher Creek looked nice as we passed by, and there were a lot of vans in there.
I'd rather have the old 'duck bath', which I did, than use a shower like that.

We stayed there (Ozpark) last year Ozjohn, as you said, drive through sites, spotless tiled amenties block (nice clean swimming pool also), gem shop in the servo, and a great cafe that does great pizza's. Not to be confused with the other caravan park on the opposite side of the road which has an excellent reputation too.

Why is it that the parks with permanents seem to put people off? Is it the run-down state of things or the atmosphere? I know some parks lose their appeal because no one does any work around theor own sites, and the park operators don't seem to care either. I don't call myself a permanent, but I do call myself a long-termer. This park is lovely and clean, well set up, it looks professional like the owners care. The cleaners and gardeners to a great job every day. I've set up a garden adjacent to my site since January.

Can anyone plz advise on the road condition from Innisfail right through to Charters Towers using the Kennedy developmental road, staying at the roadhouse, then on to the Gregory developmental road right through. Given some of you have clearly been this way given the comments on the roadhouse, really appreciate your views. We have a big rig of 9.5 metres, flat towing a grand vitara. Thanks.
Some of those parks clearly reflect the attitude of the owners/managers. They want your money for very little effort. That's one of the experiences of travel.
