Hi Sharon, we spent three weeks on the island several years ago, towing a camper trailer, however we stayed in National parks & caravan parks everywhere. GN brother has recently done the same trip with caravan, says he got plenty of free camps and national parks camps.

We are going over to Tassie in November for three months Sharon. If you can get hold of a Camps book (we have version 6) you will find a multitude of free camps listed.

Tasmanian here (havnt got 2 head like the mythical tasmanians)
Take the van, yes the roads can be windy, major roads are ok though. Lots of free camping or cheap camping. Take twice as long to do the trip as the longest time you can image. I reckon 2 months would give you a fair look around.

Hi Sharon,
Bring the van, book early for the Spirit as you may get cheaper fare. Allow plenty of time as others have said, there is plenty to see here and do. Its a bummer when you run out of time and miss so much. People say they will do it again but seldom do There is plenty of free camping about the place and national parks and conservation areas. Country roads can be a challenge but most of your travels will I'm sure be on major arterials which are good to exellent, it is usually the persons behind the wheel that makes the diff. Bring the fishing rods and the camera. Yes get camps 6 or go here http://ozcamps.net/index.php?option=com_wrapper&view=wrapper&Itemid=29 for a look. We are 48hour stopover.

that sounds good to me also we are heading over there for 3 weeks in spetember( if i stop spending money on land yachts) and are taking the camper fishing rods and a camera, have got the camps 6 book so it should be a good holiday

Hi Sharon,

We are at present into our third week of five, here in Tassie. Bloomin' cold, but the weather has not really stopped us doing anything - including sausage sizzles in the middle of sleet and rain at parks around the place. The locals most probably think we are nuts - but, hey! who cares??? We are enjoying ourselves! Today we came across from Launceston to St Helens, very windy, but if you take it easy you will have no problems - just a few idiots that obviously know the roads and pass you over double lines. We did pull over where it was possible, but did not really have too much traffic that we held up.

Our friends suggested booking into caravan parks for a week at a time (pay for 6, get 7th nt free - if you don't ask, you don't get), and then do day trips out from your bases - saves pulling the van around all over the place, eg. wk 1 in Devonport, wk 2 in L'ceston, 3 nts down east cst, 3 nts @ Pt Arthur, a wk in Hobart, couple of nts at Strahan on west cst, and a couple of nts back in D'port before getting the boat back to Melb.

Having an absolute ball, as I'm sure you will too - so when you get here, have a wonderful trip.

PS we choose to stay in c/pks that don't belong to chains, and have found them cheaper and friendlier, and most are 'no frills' as well. The ammenities are spot on too.

Look out when going to tassie, apparantly the place is beautiful and people end up moving there. This happaened to my parents and the people they have meet down there who have also relocated is surprising. I will visit them after footy season to see their new home...

we took van and were able to be in Tassie for 6 months. Even then, we didn't get to do everything we wanted to, in the way of walks. The island is just jam packed with things to do and see, especially if you like walking. We went across in October and back in April, which gave us cheaper boat fares.
