ok so this is buyer beware, i do a fair bit of "shopping" on ebay, infact i like ebay a lot but a recent purchase has turned into somewhat of a nightmare i was buying so amping gear and some stuff for my landyacht funly enough from the same seller, well to cut a long store short after some messaging to and fro looking for my purchases it seems tis was nothing but a bit of a scam, it seems that they didn't have the items i has "purchased" now being some what of a savy ebayer i felt a rat almost right away as i mostly only buy from people i have delt with in the past, but having never delt with this person i wasn't handing over any cash until i saw the goods,,, i didn't get my purchases but i was lucky enough not to loose any money either but for someone who is not up with it they could have been taken for a rather large amount of cash...so ebay is a good way to buy things cheap but buyer beware make sure you know what your getting before you hand over any cash

Hi BB - haven't had a problem with Ebay myself - don't buy that much - but sometimes I wonder if sellers are actually using another account to boost selling prices close to close of auction time - I mean would you believe I was in what could be called a "bidding war" with someone over a lawn bowls measure - how many people would be buying one of these, really? I just thought it was a bit iffy, myself.
Only ever use paypal.

I never use it for that very reason BB. Too easy to get dudded. A few weeks ago, I was checking out an Item which I thought was being sold in Australia. [Not on e.bay]
Had to fill out credit card details as well, to get more info. on product. When I finally saw that it was in the USA, I cancelled, and got off the site. About a week later, my Bank rang me, with a Query re. a payment request for $1.00 from the USA.
Needless to say they had blocked Payment, and I now have a new Debit card.
I bought my caravan on ebay, sight unseen except for the photos on site. The only problem was it was in Nowra, and I was in Broome. Diagonally distant as this country is, I went to take delivery. Transport mobs wanted about $6000 to deliver it. So I took my girlfriend for a drive and did the lap in 25 days. I closed my ebay account after that. It's still my home. I do some purchasing online paying by credit card. It's been ok so far.

My son got wind of a scam on ebay when he was looking to buy a camper trailer. He's very savvy too BB. Just when he was about to find out a bit more detail to dob him in, the seller wised up too, and dropped off the radar.
Then a month or so ago, my daughter received an email congratulating her on her purchase. She hadn't purchased anything. Same thing, she got onto her bank right away and changed her card.
I get my son to do it for me if I'm buying something, as I'd be the fool who got caught!
If I find something on eBay that I want, I decide how much I will pay ,then wait till the very last minute to enter my bid, normally I allow 15 seconds before the close of the auction to press the confirm button. That way you don't over bid and you reduce the chance of those "iffy" bids Of course, there are the genuine bids that may have been placed earlier and exceed your bid. Using this system, I win about 95% of the items I want at the price I was prepared to pay. Maybe I could have got it cheaper, but research the item , establish a fair price and happy ebaying

I have about 380 successful transactions on ebay. Scams are usually easy to find and that is why I also use PayPal because if there is ever a problem, they will refund the money. Ebay Guarantee !!
So don't be too scared of it...but just cautious as if it smells like a duck and waddles like a duck, then it usually is a duck......as they say.
I also do the same as Bent axle...however I use a program called Auction Sentry ($25 a year) and it puts my maximum bid on for me automatically, 9 seconds before the end. I win heaps this way
I use ebay a lot,and have got some amazing deals, but always use paypal as its guarenteed. Haven,t had a lot of problems, but it is an auction, and as always, let the buyer beware. My biggest problem is bidding when drunk!Got to stop that, as I usually buy things I don,t need.
I use ebay, only through PayPal, you still need to put your credit/debit card details on PayPal, my method is this, DON't use your regular credit/debit card open a debit card with your bank and only ever leave $43.50 in it so IF somebody accesses it you will not lose too much cash.
I put our ShipShape roof top tent on Gumtree (for $2600.00) a couple of weeks ago, a guy sent me a text I repiled by email to him and he wanted to pay into my bank account, asking me for my bank deposit details, he also wanted me to ship the roof top to Malaysia, I told him the ad said a cash sale only, I could deliver to his address, he again asked for my bank detals, I told him to pxxs off, have not heard from him since, so you do need to be careful sellar or buyer
I have used E bay for a lot of transactions and also pay by Paypal.
So far no trouble with payment or supply.
I am careful but was caught with a transaction,
Purchased a generator for myself which is a little beaut and was using it as I often do when a mate saw it and wanted one so we jumped on the net and purchased a similar one from a different seller.
The genny arrived within a week and looked the goods and worked well for 1 week then it started to malfunction and has continued to do so.
When WE contacted the seller who would only answer E mails and would not supply a phone no there was no joy at all. I finally got a phone number through P/pal and the firm was rang but still no joy at all.
So it is still a bit of buyer beware.

I have used ebay for years both to sell and to buy without any problems, but you do have to be careful even with paypal. I do know of someone who lost many thousands of dollars trying to buy a vehicle, paid a deposit through paypal, it was a scam and paypal won't cover the lost money which went to the scammers. There was no vehicle. Buyer Beware!!!
I love to buy on line and only ever use Paypal. Just like Wombat, I listed a reverse cycle airconditioner on Gumtree. Got a text back saying someone would pay more than I asked, and he would ship it to Malaysia. I let it go at that.....
I kept hearing about this eBay & embarrassed myself at the shpping centre when I asked the young lass there if the centre had an eBay store. I m a oriole slow to catch onto this stuff. I use to wind start a car to go shopping, now I just click a few keys on a pc. What next?
