Most of our trips are combined with Genealogy, My better half has been involved in Genealogy now for about 35 Years I on the other hand only half that time
I too have found convicts in the tree. We were from a well off family (Lawyers, judges etc) and when I was younger I didnt understand why we had no information on my paternal grandmother (My grandfather being a barrister in Warrnambool ) My cousin discovered the secret recently. Grandma was the granddaughter of a Martha Fagan and John Smith, both convicts in Tasmania. Im not sure why John Smith was in Port Arthur but Martha was transported for 7 years for stealing a piece of calico. We would have a busy time today transporting shoplifters. Wouldnt we?

I have been researching family for a couple of years now. I have trouble with Ireland because of many records being destroyed by fire in 1922 (but I will persevere) but OK after they arrived in Australia - father's paternal side but his German side goes back to 1596. On his mother's side little luck past his mother's maternal grandparents coming from Scotland in the mid 1850s, her paternal side is also German and I can find nothing before they were in Ballarat during the 1850s.
On my mother's paternal side it is hard to find much before mid to late 1800s (Liverpool England) - Young is a rather common name. BUT my mother's maternal side goes back to 958 (so far) (Conan I of Brittany)!! I am a great granddaughter of Henry I of England (25 times removed), not to mention King Malcolm III of Scotland same "great" as Henry I (no doubt there are hundreds like me). Not to mentioned their forebears etc and there was one called Roger of Bigod who was one of the four Magna Charta Barons charged with ensuring the Magna Charta was upheld. Back then they all seem to be "of" usually written as "de" or "le", e.g. Isabelle de Warenne or Roger of Bigod or Henry le Normandie.
I am enjoying reading about these very distant ancestors - there are Plantagenets, William the Conqueror, kings, queens, earls, duchesses, etc, and there are a couple of knights who went off to the crusades - one died in Nicacea and it appears another in Palestine. There are castles, lines dying out, a Lord High Justice of England or two. There are distant families in England, Scotland, France, Hungary, Sweden and I know not who, what and where else I will find.

My friends are much more sceptical than I am about my links to greatness, and ask to see the DNA, however, I'm loving the history - as you are.
My father's maternal line as Sinclairs, who are traced through Rosslyn Castle (of Da Vinci Code fame) and said thus to be linked to the Merovingian kings of the south of France, and thus -if you believe - to the legends to Mary Magdalene. Now, it makes interesting campfire conversation, but the thought that one might be related to Jesus insults all kinds of folk - devout christians and strict genealogists among them.
It will be nice to meet up with you one day "cousin"!!! I find the history really interesting but know there are hundreds and probably hundreds of thousands - they all had so many children!! My friends too are very sceptical about my links to royalty but I think it is OK as long as you look at it all the right way and do not get carried away expecting titles and financial gain.
Just call me princess

my dad and i spent some time in the Uk looking for his family over there, which we have found and also I got to go to Gallipoli to see where my mums father and dads great uncle fought.. its a great experiance
If you get one of those sun visors that tennis players and bowlers wear, and lots of other people of course, put it on upside down covered with alfoil and stick a "jewel" on the front............wallaaaa...........instant tiara.
Thanks for the advice Ma but I think I can stand the expense. If all else fails I think my granddaughter has crown from a dancing concert and not only does it have fake jewels, it has orange and purple feathers as well. The only thing it might be a tad small. I might wait until they are on special at Spotlight

Oo, that could open a can of family worms. The family was very hush hush about my beginnings and my mother's end when I was 4 and she was 25. My maternal grandmother was very good at keeping up appearances, just like Mrs. Bucket, not bouquet. I've learned all sorts since, but never able to substantiate it. I have enough trouble holding my own immediate family together, without much luck. I'm from the German/Prussian genetic Lutheran lines. Starting in the Adelaide Hills, on the maternal side, at least. The real paternal side is a total mystery. I'm really not game to dig too deep.
Hey Granny - with a Prussian background there - maybe you are related to Jonathon, who also has Prussian history - now that would be an amazing coincidence wouldn't it??

My German forebears are from Prussia too - I am going to see what I can find out about why so many Prussians seemed to leave around the same time. Ah another thread to follow...
