I tried last night, but it said I could not access the eCensus form without a 'registration number' that I would get from the "collector" when they came to my home.
I searched the site a fair bit and finally found that I should contact the Census Enquiry Centre but could not find a this "centre' on their site.
Eventually I found a 1300 number that I will ring today. Apparently, they will SMS the 'registration number' so I can do the form.
I found their site a little frustrating as it does not mention people with "no fixed address" who are travelling full-time.
Hopefully my call to the 1300 number today will clear it all up.
Cheers
John

A friend is off to Norfolk Island on the weekend and was worried that she wouldn't be able to fill out the form - thought she might get fined or something - but the ABS told her not to worry about it - I think she is still a bit concerned though. Is the registration number the one on the form?

Jules the census is only for people in the country on the night of the 9th, so if she is not here she can't fill it in. Its not like an election where you have to vote before you go. Also, heard on the news a couple of days ago you can fill in the e-census anytime but can't send it till the 9th, so you must put it on save until that date.
Thanks guys - she is not filling it out - she was just confused - thought Norfolk was part of Australia - I will probably just fill mine out manually - I am likely to forget it if I do it online!

I rang the 1300 338 776 number for the Census Enquiry Centre concerning how I can do the eCensus form (or the hard copy form), given I am travelling full-time, and got referred to their website which gave me the following information -
Travelling in remote areas?
If you are travelling through a remote area that is not often frequented and situated some distance away from a town or community, such as roadside stops or within remote National Parks, the ABS has made arrangements for you to still be able to participate in the Census.
People who know they will be travelling in remote areas on Census night will be able to pick up a Traveller's Pack from designated Collection Points located around Australia. (See link below)
The Traveller's Pack contains a Census form, an eCensus envelope, a mail back envelope, a Census brochure and instructions on how to submit an eCensus or mail back the Census form. Packs will be available from Collection Points from 1 August until 15 August.
The recorded (on hold) voice states that the Census is obligatory and the ABS can contact each person and ask why they haven't completed a form - guess they will know which addresses have or have not responded.
Cheers
John

We haven't received ours either here smokey. They will all be delivered over the next 8 days.
Yes it is obligatory except for people who are not residing in Australia on the night.
Not sure if they would fine you if you didn't but there may be some form of punishment.
I don't know a lot about it other than having done them in other years and know a couple of people who are working for the census doing the delivering and collecting.
Hi Jules, yes, your census number is on the front page, either on the single page e census form or household form. I found the e page online messy and it was quicker to fill out collection form!
When the Census lady came here on Sunday, she told me that quite a few people had already completed theirs on-line. And I seem to remember reading somewhere, that you could do this from the 28th or 29th July.
My biggest problem was remembering which one was the Address Bar. [Use the "Jargon" very rarely.] Once there, it's a breeze believe me.
Not sure if they would fine you if you didn't but there may be some form of punishment.
I was missed out for the Census that was between "84 and "86. Never heard a thing about it. At the time, I was living on the coast between Portland Roads and the Olive River, on Cape York.
Cheers,
Sheba.

My census papers were delivered today. The lady asked me if I wanted to do the e-census, I said yes and she gave me different paperwork to the one you would get if filling out the paperwork. It is a little sealed bit of paper work with your unique number on the front and will have a security code on the inside to be able to do the e-cesus. She said she is notified when I fill in online so she knows not to come back to me. If she doesn't get that notification she will be back. If I know I am still going to be at this address and the only one here on the 9th she said there is no harm in filling it out on the day before and lodging it as although the internet should cope with all the lodgements there will be about 30% doing it online so could be a bit slow. She did take my surname to line it up with the numbers she had given me. Easy!!!
.. Now that I'll be travelling back to NSW for a while, I'll have to pick up a "Travellers Pack" so that I can participate in the Census ..
I think I should be able to pick one up at Hay .. on the way prior to the 9th
Jon
I think you should be able to do one in a caravan park Jon, they will have the forms, so if you stay in a park on Tuesday night you should be ok.......We did one in a caravan park in Victor Harbour, given to you by them and handed in to them before you depart.....

The census fellow dropped the paper work off here on the northern side of Adelaide on Sunday. He gave me the numbers required to register and told me he had started to fill out the forms, but you can't send them until the 9th. If you start the form and leave it you can go back to complete and send on the day. As a collector he said it did him a favour if we all did it online. They don't get paid enough to run around collecting them again. They don't get paid by household drop and collection. It's a menial hourly rate.

There must be thousands of us who have already done ours on-line. All quite Legit. We're allowed to do them early. If we weren't, surely they would have reprimanded us for so doing. We've done them, and gotten receipt Nos. to keep with our Census Envelopes, as proof.
