cassette loo

HI all. Our names r Maria and Steve .We r about to set off on what may well be a permanent working holiday. Never owned a van so some of my questions may be silly but if u dont ask u wont learn.Been reading up on cassette loo. Most mention placing a deoderizing and lubricating soluton into the flushing tank. Problem is my loo flushes from the vans main tank. How do i freshen and lube the loo?smile

Hello and welcome Steve and Maria.
It's more imporant to deodorise the cassette contents rather than the top tank.
There are several suggestions of what to use including fabric soaker such as Napisan, the actual chemicals available in the camping places or another recipe mixed at home from ammonia, concentrated disinfectant, and borax.
The pre-mixed commercial chemicals are an expensive way to go.
As the cassette is emptied regularly, the base liquid is refreshed at the changeover.
I personally don't use the van loo for solids.
To lubricate the rubber seal I use spray olive oil occasionally.

Hi & welcome ..

The only silly questions are those left unasked.

I have had a cassette toilet without a top tank for more than 10yrs.

We use it for #1s & #2s as required; But use the public amenities during the day.

As CG says the commercial chemicals are expensive if you are using them all the time.

We use a lid full of cheap coles/WW nappy san in the cassette with a litre of warm water.

A few drops of any smelly stuff when I think of it  .. maybe eucalyptus oil.

I empty it every 3 or 4 days & give it a thorough clean with a double dose & soaking after each trip.

The seals & bowl are given a liberal spray with olive oil with each recharge or clean.

I sometimes give the bowl a spray of the standard deodoriser after use & before closing the lid & always put the ceiling extractor fan on when using the toilet.

Hope this helps.

The flushing will be ok with your system

The cassette as the others have said will need emptying regularly how often will depend on the use.

Foe the chemicals I use as many others do the cheap coles/woolies brand napisan.

My mixture is approx 1/2 tea cup of powder mixed with about a litre of warm water to disolve the powder then into the cassette. Lasts about 3 days.

For the slide and rubber seal Olive Oil spray.

Your loo will stay clean and fresh for yonks.

Ditto, except we don't empty it until it's at least half full.
We add a little extra power each time we deposit solids and aslo add a couple of drops of Eucalyptus oil to the top tank. keeps everything sweet smelling.
Cheers, Ozjohn
