Quite often nomads ask on here the prices of Rego fees for different state so they can choose which state they should go with when they are on the road permanently.
Got my renewal today for Myrtle. For 6 months my total Rego fee is $106.75
This is made up of Registration Fee 47.90 - TAC Charge 53.50 - Insurance Duty 5.35
Total $106.75 which is discounted from the normal rate because of pensioner rates.
They are the only charges involved in the vehicle rego, 12 months would be double that.
Hope this helps someone who is looking to make that decision.

Have a car which we no longer need and are giving to a relative in Vic. The car is registered in NSW, gets a pink slip (mechanical check) annually and 2 weeks ago had a full service, new muffler and new brakes. Great condition.
It went today for a roadworthy check in Victoria....... over $200 just for the check, plus the mechanic required :-
1. a new windscreen, despite it not having a single chip, crack etc. He said it had microscopic damage like sand blasting !!! 2. an exhaust rubber (?) 3 new brake fluid and a flush 4 new gasket .... says its "pouring oil", despite no oil ever on the carport floor, or anything obvious on the engine 5 new timing belt
Total cost $970.
Will be the last car I ever try to register in Victoria.
Only comment I can make on that lot is Myrtle wasn't losing any obvious oil either, none on ground and no black smoke pouring out exhaust. But she was using it big time. Yet her motor was worn. Hope you questioned all those needs. I checked my account from back then. Can't give you a figure on how much he charged for the roadworthy check as included in with doing the roadworthy and service labour. But the roadworthy certificate cost $110.00, he had to take her to someone else to do that.
Certainly a lot different Sheba. Thats why I thought I would put it up here. Someone asked a week or two ago as they were travelling and could choose which state to use for rego. Will help them to have actual figures to compare.
Vic Roads is a rip off.... Remember my Coaster last year Bought if or $20.000 Still cost another $5000.00 for road Worthy Certificate.....Yes it's cheap for the Pensioner...But they'll rip you off big time it's Called GST the Govt Love it........This was bought about by Brumby and Company........

Jimbo I don't think you paid the $5,000 for the roadworthy to Vicroads. You do pay them a fee extra on top of your rego at time of new registration but its minimal. The $5,000 would have gone to the people who did the work for the roadworthy. As I can vouch for with the thousands I had to pay. Not Vic Roads fault but either mine, the seller or the mechanic who did the inspection before I bought my van, Take your pick. My Gst in above figures for the rego was $4.86, and was included in the above figures. They can only charge you 10% of the figure, theres no extra gst charged.
In NSW, I only pay for green slip on my wagon (usually around the 260-280) and rego on the van (415 - no green slip required)as well as the inspection fee of $50 last time I did it in Nowra. Pensioner rates are a bit different up here in Qld. Just bought a new second wagon with 6 months rego. Dont recall how much as was included in the drive away price. I had a quote on the cruiser up here to change it over and they quoted something like 300+ and then your green slip. Be heading back thru NSW in November and get it re-registered there.
Another thing; once I register the new wagon, it wont matter where I am as far as the RTA is concerned as they accept registered mechanics' inspection certificates from any State and pay thru internet. I did this with the van back in May. If you can scan and email therre should not be a problem. cheers Terry
Pauline, in Victoria the only time you need a roadworthy is when you originally register the vehicle or if the vehicle's rego is being changed over to someone else or if you've been pulled over and the police put an unroadworthy sticker on your car. The problem is that the interpretation of the roadworthy laws is something that can be flouted.
Rip & Rosie if you paid $200 just for the check, I'm afraid you have been ripped off big time, I have had a full roadworthy check done on a semi, Prime mover and trailer for $150.00 approx 1 year ago... And before anyone says otherwise it was a proper roadworthy done at the Ballarat Roadworthy Centre and I did not know anyone there...
The best thing about Vic is the trailer rego $38.30 for 12 months no matter what size, even fifth wheelers as long as they are attached by a ball, if they have a turntable then it comes under a semi trailer and it's a lot dearer....
No roadworthy in SA and only in WA when changing rego. My vehicles are still registered in WA and it's cheaper to register the cruiser there with the pension. The van costs about $100 per 12 months. SA is actually cheaper but I haven't transferred it over. Cruiser is dearer though. I had to get a roadworthy certificate for the cruiser for work purposes. As a member of the RAA it costs me $92, and after less than an hour she passed, with no problems. Not bad for a 16 year old Tojo. NSW is definitely the dearest state with the most regulations. You get penalised off the map just for living there. And then you have to pay tolls on the motorways. Jeez, they really get you there! No tolls in SA or WA either. It's all relative I reckon. I pay everything by bpay, although I still get the bills by snail mail.
