We have been settling in well to our new home with our new adorable Golden Retriever pup Charlie.
The fences are up, the turf lawn laid, gardens becoming established. Charlie was very happy, trying to dig under the fence, lifting & chewing the newly rolled turf, digging new plants in the garden, in other words just being a pup.
We took him to the vet on Tuesday morning for his final vaccination (Parvo & Kennel Cough) and to get something for the minor dose of the chits he'd had for a couple days.
That night he developed a kind of cough and seemed to be having laboured breathing so first thing in the morning it was back to the vet. We left him there as they wanted to do xrays and give him some antibiotics for an aparent lung infection. Two hours later we were asked to come & get him and take him to Murdoch University Emergency Vet - 70 odd km from here - where they put the little tyke on a ventilator & fed him pure oxygen to try to do what his lungs now couldn't do. Wer got the phone call at 11.30pm, his little heart had given out and nothing could be done to save him.
Needless to say, we were gutted, our little boy going from a minor diareah to dead within 36 hours. We want to get some answers to how this can happen.
We brought him home yesterday and buried him in the garden that he enjoyed digging in so much.
Sorry to burden you with this but we are finding it helps to talk about it even if it is difficult.
Regards
Neil & Lynne

Please accept my condolances to the loss of your little mate. I lost mine of 17 years 2 years ago last 3rd August. Your post hit me pretty hard, in that it is just not me that cares.
So so sorry, we know what its like to lose a much love pet and friend. Ours passed 4 yrs ago and we still miss him. Still get tears in our eyes when we talk about him. Luckily we have another little mate, but have not forgotten our Maxie Boy.
O'h dear Neil and Lynne - that is so terribly sad - hopefully the cause will be determined - not that it really helps. Its amazing how quickly they become a much loved family member - just like our kids really. Please know we are thinking of you and precious Charlie - Jenny and Barry

you'll never forget them, they do become part of the family ..
Neil & Lynne, so sorry to read about Charlie, I know how you must be feeling, please accept our deepest sympathy. To me it is just like losing a child and yes I am a big sook but I love dogs and it hurts so much when one hears of a loss.

The clearest path in life is always the one behind you....
Thank you ever so much everyone for your sympathy and condolences, we truly appreciate it. We're still very much distraught and in tears, even now, at what has happened as Charlie was so very, very much loved by both of us and all of our friends and family.
Not to be greeted by a puppy that was so excited to see you every morning on waking as if he'd never seen you before really makes it hit home hard plus there were so many other small things that endeared our little boy to us. He was with us 24/7 and was never ever left alone. We just miss him so much!
He was only 3 1/2 months old and didn't even have a chance at life.
Charlie's vet (where he had his vaccines/checkups) is now compiling a report to a Government Department on what has happened plus sending a report to the drug company as he went from a happy, healthy little puppy to seriously ill so rapidly after having his final vaccine for Parvo and KC. As the vet said "we don't want this to ever happen again to some one else's puppy!".
The Doctor and staff at Murdoch University Pet Emergency in Perth gave their all in trying to save him and we can't thank them enough for what they tried to do for him. He was the most serious case they've had this year.
Charlie's breeder in South Australia has been very supportive right from the beginning and we can't thank her enough for her support through all this.
Thank you all once again.

So sorry to hear the sad news about Charlie. What a shock. You don't take you beloved pet in for vaccs and expect something like that to happen. Would be so unexpected. My thoughts are with you, having lost my little Mindy two years ago at the age of 17 years and just now having come back from watching the movie, Red Dog. The tissues are very busy today.
Neil & Lynne,
My thoughts are with you both. I lost my girl 2 years ago at the start of august and not a day goes by where I don't think of her or talk to her, it was the two of us for a decade or more & I still carry her picture in my wallet.
There's nothing that can be said to ease your pain & not all people understand what it's like for us animal people.
You will meet again someday !
Regard jack
So sorry Neil and Lynne to hear about the loss of your precious puppy Charlie, it brings me to tears. They are family from day one, and steal your heart.
My thoughts are with you. We lost our darling Sophie last year at the age of 14 and there isn't a day that I don't miss her, and I still talk to her.

Sorry to hear about the pup it is so hard to deal with they cdertainly become one of the family from the time you bring them home know exactly how you feel. Take care and hugs from us. Helena.
Dear Neil and Lynne, words cannot ever take away the hurt that is experienced in this situation. As owners of two little dogs that are our traveling companions we would be devastated if anything happened to either of them. I trust that in time that you are able to remember the fond times that you had with Charlie and that as time moves on those memories will be forever engrained into your life's. Our prayers for your loss are with you tonight.
Brian & Cheryl

You only live once, but if you live it right, once is enough !!!!!!
So very sorry for the sad loss of such a gorgeous puppy. When I had my border collie have his first yearly followup needle, he started vomiting and coughing and developed a fever. The vet diagnosed kennel cough. This was in Geraldton. He was pretty sick but slowly recovered with anti biotics.
After research on the net, I read that yearly vaccinations aren't necessary, so Murloc hasn't had one since he was sick. It means he can't go to kennels but will cross that bridge when I have to.
Hi Neil and Lynne. So sorry to hear of your loss. You must be reeling from shock and devestation. I had a little pup who had to have a major liver operation at 6 months. Unfortunately they failed to diagnose a defective mitral valve - otherwise I would not have put him through major surgery and he died at 12mths from congestive heart failure - I had him put to sleep when it was time. It sounds like they suspect the vaccine. If it was defective I hope they identify and isolate it quickly. These days a 3 year vaccination is common practice and acceptable to kennels provided it is noted appropriately on their certificates. There is some consensus by scientists that vaccinations are effective for many years or even for life. I don't bother with kennel cough because there are so many strains it is impossible to vaccinate against all of them and the virus mutates. Kennel cough is normally a mild condition not associated with vomiting as far as I know so perhaps Jo there was a complication...... I am really suspicious of vet pharmaceuticals and know they are less stringently monitored and trialled than human pharmaceuticals (having worked with the Commonwealth regulating authority at one point). Ellen
Sorry to hear about your pup Charlie,Neil & Lynne know how you feel i lost my little Peke" Charlee" 4yrs ago at 13yrs and my Spaniel 2yrs ago at 13.5yrs they certainly leave a hole in your life when they go. Our condolences are with you.
Our condolences, I think when ever an animal lover reads something like this our stomachs churn and we understand what you are going through. To be taken so young, just when he was becoming an integral member of your family. So, so, so, sad. Thinking of you!!!!!
that is so sad i was only showing my hubby your gorgeous little pal not long ago ,so sorry to hear that it makes you wonder doesnt it why things like that happen, and you never get an answer most of the time.
what more can i say but im so sorry hope you are both doing ok .
