I feel for you and everyone who loses a family "pet".
I hope they find out what exactly caused your mate's sudden death.
I've chosen not to have a pet, but I pat every dog which passes my site, if that dog is friendly.
This park allows dogs, and there are times of dog shows when there are almost more dogs than people. Mostly very well behaved, and the owners are responsible too.
This weekend it was All Breeds, and I "met" a whippet bitch. The owner was a nice lady from Mildura.
Some weeks it's Rotweilers, Beagles, Dobermans etc. It's fun really.
