Updated August 22, 2011 19:28:44 Map: Genoa A three-day search for a man wanted in two states has ended with Victoria Police finding him hiding in a wombat hole in the state's remote far east Gippsland region.
Detectives say police dogs tracked the 43-year-old man to the hole next to a river at Genoa, near Mallacoota.
The man had been on the run since Friday afternoon after he fled from highway patrol officers who pulled him over at Cann River.
Local police say the man is wanted in Victoria and New South Wales on charges ranging from driving offences to assault, and numerous warrants have been issued for his arrest.
A police helicopter and the dog squad joined the hunt for him in rugged parts of Gippsland before it ended at the wombat hole.
It is not clear how long the man had been hiding in the hole.
The size of a medium pig and a skinny man would fit easily. The holes are very dangerous when driving around unknown country, and the wombat is a very solid animal. Striking one with your vehicle at the wrong angle could flip the car over. I've seen them at the Gawler Ranges north of Wirrulla on upper Eyre Peninsula and other parts of the country in my travels. Not bad eating if you cook it fresh.

Wombat (Vombatus ursinus) holes are on average 70-90mm in diameter and can typically extend up to 20 or 30 metres. Came across a little ditty by US humourist poet Ogden Nash. It may or may not apply to the Wombat on this site - as a new person would not want to risk offence.

Leaving Sydney one night in a EB Falcon station wagon towing a 6x4 box trailer, heading back to Victoria on the freeway, lights dipped as a car was approaching on the opposite side, freeway made of concrete, What's that?? A wombat blended in with the colour of the road, straight under the right hand front wheel, car bounced about three times, pulled over and checked, apart from bent front guard no other damage, luckily...
I thought by the feel it would have torn the wheel out...
Wow, really surprised just how big the caves are. 20 -30 metres. They certainly are a strong animal. You don't hear a lot about them so that is very interesting.

CG, what's with this eating wombat, you cannot eat wombats
maybe the poor little thing got shuved down the back of the hole against the crim's smelly feet or fat behind? poor little thing, shaking in fear, now in therapy.
or maybe it was out rooting around, and came home to a messy wombat hole?
or maybe the hole WAS on the rental market..... "For lease, large unit, recently rennovated with limited views, quiet area, one bedroom, easy to clean........
