Hi there tommogt, we in Nth West NSW and yep the summer is HOT. Haven't been to Armidale but sometimes we go to Bingara on the Gwydir River, or Brettis Reserve near Gloucester. Might try Nundle this summer. Best to try near a river or at least a swimming pool to cool off!
Welcome to the forum, have to say that Bingara is lovely, the caravan park is right on the river and plenty of shade. But if you really want a cool spot, have stopped off at Guyra on Christmas Eve one year and damn near froze my butt off!!! But then Guyra is always a cold place - the caravan park there is very basic (and a little 'tired') but certainly clean and is supposed to be the highest caravan park in Oz.

I can't make any recommendations about NSW in summer, but I will say "welcome" to the forum Graeme. Nice to see you here. I hope you enjoy your stay. Safe and happy travels.

Well Tommogt, we usually stay home in Canberra over the summer school hols!. But as soon as they are finished, theres Tathra, Eden, on the South coast, or in the mountains in the Wadbilliga NP or the Kosciuszko NP. Rarely hot at any of these places and plenty of spots to camp.
If you can afford it go to Tasmania. I have found most good spots I have been to around NSW are full during holidays but one nice spot I have been is Ellenborough, west of Wauchope towards Walcha. Forget about it during holidays.
Basically from NSW and now on the road full-time, One place I frequently stop at whether it be summer or winter is "Macquarie Woods" which is approx.halfway between Bathurst and Orange and it s also in the Camps book ..
Winter can be bitterley cold, but summer is much more the chosen season in my book .. it is a large area and usually has a wind blowing which provides the breeze .. situated on undulating hills and well maintained by the "Forestry"
Worth a look at ..

Where do the Grey-nomads retreat to in hot Summer NSW.?.......This GN likes to spend summer in a place next to a nice bushland reserve, friendly neighbours, 5 min drive to a nice uncrowded beach, refreshing seabreeze most afternoons. Where's this place you ask? It's Home! (where I live when not on the road). I avoid travelling during the summer school hols.
Bingara is mentioned in this thread, also near Bingara is Copeton Dam that's worth considering.
Lots of free camping on the Gwydir River at Bingara. We are going there in November for a week. Meeting up with people that go there all the time. Looking forward to it. Lovely little town too, stop in at the cake shop!
Spend the 2-3 weeks of the Xmas - New Year period somewhere pleasant, away from the coast. Snowy Mts is one such area. Once that crazy period is over, head for the coast.
i tend to get into one of the nat parks on sth coast, there are still some free ones and some are cheap. But you have to get in at least a week before xmas to get a site. In the free ones some moron will sneak in when you are out and park his van on your "site". I always now put up clothes line etc to "protect" my bit a bush and my car spot. I cannot handle the heat I need the evening sea breeze. Nat parks have wrecked my favourite xmas spot (meroo/half-tide) by fencing off the good camping spots we have been using for 40 years.
