Sorry. New to this. My son (40) suggests a hostel in Mexico City. His Dad, Uk home-based, is dubious. Another much-travelled Granny may know of a safe B&B in Mexico City. Tricky topic: don't want to cause rucktions. Need to see my grand-daughters: hotels too expensive. Flights from UK cost a bomb anyway.
Go to the Library and get the lonely Planet Guide to Mexico, or Mexico City.
You will possibly find cheaper accommodation listed in there with details. Not just backpacker type accommodation listed. They have a range of hotels, hostels, and basic stuff listed.
Phone/ email the "Mexico City Tourist Board" or whatever its called. The net is a great way to organise and book travel these days. We have booked (in the past ) 5 months of flights, accommodation, cars, buses etc. from Perth through Hong Kong, Greece, Britain, France, Holland, Czeq Republic, all on the net with no hassles.
Can your rellies in Mexico City not do the research for you !
Good Luck and enjoy your trip and seeing the grand kids
If I was traveling to Mexico ATM, I would ask my consulate, their suggestion.
Two years ago it was suggested very strongly not to take our RV in. Also go to a good travel agent that is familiar with Mexico on a budget. Parts of Mexico have had a lot of crime recently, and they may help you work out the safest and least expensive way to travel. I noticed you are in the UK, can I ask why you contacted an Australian site ?
Happy grandchild visiting!
Cheers and happy Mexico traveling.
Sharon
This Granny hasn't been further than Oz and NZ. I also thought it was a reference to Victorians. However, welcome to the forum Bowyo, and I hope you get some clear advice about travelling safely in Mexico. It wouldn't be my first choice of travel destinations, but to each his/her own.

Hi everyone! Thanks for the thoughts and suggestions. Mexico at its worse sure is a dangerous place. Other parts of the same city quiet, benign and hospitable. This weekend our eldest (Mark, 42) does the big version of the British 3 Peaks with a team from work: Ben Nevis first, just before dark, then Scafell Pike in the Lake District (3 a.m. I believe) then Snowdon in North Wales. Followed by a collapse into bed.... Whew!
