Hey that/s not true about prawns and soft shells and full moons = generally full moon is not a good time to fish for anything. Occasionally you get a soft shelled prawn but that has nothing to do with the moon.

Howdyeeee Elle , read that on the full moon, prawns shed there shells, to grow bigger, and people who eat prawns, dont like soft prawns,,,But I bow to Your superior understanding.of prawns, hehe, .....Billeeeee
Oh Jon, this travel thing is certainly opening your mind and your demeanour. I used to perceive you as a very reserved gentleman, but that image has faded somewhat recently. All good of course. I like the new image and your developed sense of humour.
Now to prawns. They don't trawl for prawns on the full moon because the little buggers dig in and don't swim. They like it dark to feed and do "other stuff" so other fishies don't see them as dinner. Nothing to do with the texture of the shell. Most pelagic species go quiet in the moon for the same reason. It's a very private time for the sea critters.

Well Howdyeeee excited and un-excited people, Nomads.Boomers, hi to all U Normal people,,hehehe, Well today I came OUT, ..seen the flowers,,went skipping through them, found the real Me,,,,, Billeeeeee........
Hey Billeeeee are you talking about wildflowers - this is a great time of year where every part of the bush shimmers with flowers and life even if not in a premium wildflower area. I took my visiting cousins down to Greens Pools today (Denmark WA) - they have a bush tracker and have been nomads for 10 yrs. There were so many rare orchids on the way down to Greens Pool and it was really special.
They only fish through the dark nights of the moon as the catch rate significantly reduces and soon as the moon gets up. Even when fishing in the darker nights as soon as the moon came up the catch rate would drop. The closer to the full moon the bigger the drop. Each catch after the rise of the moon could be half the rate of the previous catch for the night. eg each hour.
Often we sat on anchor till the moon was setting then we would head and start, sometimes after midnight.
The same effect as the sun came up. As soon as there was a lightening of the sky then time to pull the gear up and head for shore.
If you are in Cowel when the trawlers come in you might get a good feed cheap if you ask around.
Regards Brian

My ex and I worked the trawlers in the Gulf of Carpentaria and across to NW Oz coast to WA, in the 70's, catching banana prawns in the daytime, and later in the year, catching tiger prawns in the night time. Bananas by day and tigers by night. The king prawns in SA behave the same as tigers, but they're a bigger, better prawn. I'm not a "wharf rat" anymore, but I still know where to go or who to ask to get a feed. He also worked on the SA Fisheries research vessel, and the crew got to take the experiemental catch home. We couldn't sell them but we could trade with them. eg a secondhand lounge for 1 bag. The last time I went to Pt. Lincoln my daughter presented me with a cooked, mid-sized cray fish (rock lobster). I sat with a bowl of vinegar and some buttered bread and ate myself silly. They didn't even want to share with me. Ah, the indulgence! Mmmmm.....
