Bushfires in NQ

Be careful if you're travelling in NQ. I heard that the bushfires are bad around Townsville.

Stay safe!

It's bushfire season in Qld. After our dry winter..not that they really have a winter in FNQ..the grass is dry and if the wind gets up, it doesn't take much to catch fire.

The wind here seems to have dropped this morning, and they have forecast rain, so fingers crossed.

Snow? Yes, very weird! We had a hail storm in August, that was very weird too!

I know where you mean Marj. Gypsy had a flat tyre there. Now I've hear there's some near Gladstone too.

Also had bush fire just over a week ago in the Blue Mountains and now quite cool but this is just the start of the bushfire season and the police have caught two young blokes 14 & 19 for lighting 6 fires in the Leura area, with a few hot days and a bit of wind the bush is ready to go hopefully not a repeat of 2001 Christmas

I totally agree HW....there has been a total fire ban in Qld since 1 September through to 1 January 2012. http://www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au/

And what happens in the CP where I am currently staying......yep they lit a fire to burn the gully which was full of dead grass, leaves, logs etc.  Did it just on dusk and then went to bed a few hours later after the fire appeared to die down.  It continued to smolder for many days

Several days later when the wind picked up again the guy next door to me and I ended up having to contain the fire with a couple garden hoses in order to prevent it spreading any further and putting our vans in any further danger.  20ft flames less than 30 odd feet from my van......not happy.

So I say to all you travelers/campers out there.....PLEASE be aware of this total fire ban in Qld and that also means campfires as well.

Posting link again and hope to get the message across.

I hope you had some very stern words to say to him Boroma. I would have reported it. If you had called the fire brigade they would have known he started it and he should have been fined.

Probably a bit late now, but yes Beth, perhaps I should have at the time.  It was certainly very scary and I must admit all I could think of was stopping the fire advancing any closer to my van.  This is also why I did not think to ring 000...too busy with more pressing thoughts.

I did later HW, after I had calmed down a bit and stopped coughing from all the smoke I inhaled.

Had a terrible night that night, my eyes burned all night and I could not sleep.
