HW, will you be running the TV from Myrtle at free site's?

or only at Caravan Park's?

I think we have discussed this b4, to run the tv from Myrtle you will need a PURE sinewave inverter for digital tv, suggest at least a 300w unit.

In caravan parks just run as normal through power supply

Wombat, My digital TV is 12v Kogan and runs off house battery when free camping. No inverter. Is ths OK?

Hi wombat, Yes I already have a 300 wt pure sine wave inverter. Have that, a new in house battery, a wall volt gauge for the battery, a smart charger coming and hopefully a 12 vt kogun TV coming next week.
All I need now is for my S.in.L to find time to wire them all up. At the moment i have no power in house at all as he cut the wires to put inverter in a better place and hasn't got back to it.

I can relate to that HW. Son has decided that the current solar I have is not enough. Van in bits and pieces ATM but have given him a 3 wk deadline. Patience.......
but I know I will have an exceptional result in the end. Just hope I make it to Greens Lake

I know what you mean Chichi. This has been going on for weeks, went to Greens Lake last time with no in house power. When its your son you can actually tell him you want it done. When its a S.in.L. you don't dare say anything and just hope he hurries up.
But like you I know when he has finished it will be perfect.
Thought about going to an auto electrician, don't think I can afford it though. And would they do it exactly as you ask as Travelbug found out when she got the work done on her van, Did the opposite to what she asked.

A lot of people don't realize it but ALL small (22" & under) LED or LCD are 12v. They come with a 240v power cord and on this cord is a "Black Box" which reduces the voltage from the 240v to 12v.

If you are on tight budget you can simply cut this cord on the tv side of the box and connect a suitable 12v plug to suit your 12v supply in the 'house'. It is not difficult, there are only 2 wires - positive + and negative -.

No need for power sapping inverters.

If your tv does not have the "Black Box" then forget the above. smile

I have a 19inch Kogan + DVD player and with the black box you are talking about but the tv is not 12 volt, can you throw any light on this please.

I really don't know why I'm getting a 12 vt when I've got an inverter, just realised I don't have a 12 volt plug anywhere near the in house battery. I would have to get one connected at the same time as all this other electrical work wouldn't I?
Whats left to use the inverter with, the phone charger and the laptop I suppose. Its all too confusing,. Or I just get a normal small TV.

as you already have the inverter just get a normal digital tv and it maybe cheaper than the 12 volt one.

Make sure your inverter is a PURE sinewave type, you need that for digital tv, or so I have been told

Son installed two 12v plugs so I can now run the phone charger and lap top off 12v also. I guess thats why he's installig more solar.

Hi Wombat, if you look on the black box it will say something like..."input 240v ac - output 12v dc.

On the tv specifications near the plug it should say "input 12v dc.

The only reason for that box to be there is to convert 240v ac to 12v dc.

On your Samsung the box will be inside the caseing of the tv, a bit harder to gat at & probably not worth it if you already have, and are using an inverter.

Not 100% sure of this advice.

Our van came with a great 19 inch Palsonic TV/DVD that had the Black box to convert 240v to 12v. It was also supplied with a 12v lead (cigarette plug). The only power input to the TV was marked 12v and the polarity.

Used the supplied Palsonic 12v lead and the TV just would not fire up. Check voltage from the 240v black box and was exactly 12.0v, from the Palsonic 12v lead it measured 13.8v, the float voltage. Spoke to people at Jacar and they sold me 4 little things (like transistors but I know thats not what they are called) to reduce the 13.8 float voltage down to 12v when connected up in series. Sure enough with the 4 fitted the TV would work. Remove one and it would not (sadly cannot recall that voltage).

After 5 years purchased a Kogan 19 inch LED TV/DVD, as the Palsonic was not HD, and it works like a charm with the supplied 12v cord when the vans batteries are at 13.8v

If I recall you have a number of 12v points in your van, though they are currently disconnected. If one of those points is not where you wish to have your TV then there is not much effort required to fit a new 12v point when the wiring gets completed.

Your inverter will use a certain amount of power from your battery whilst it is powering something, say your TV. The inverter most likely be using more power than the item you are running. By running your TV direct via 12v you are saving some power by not using the inverter.

We only use our inverter to recharge things like phone, camera, laptop batteries. With our phones we can do it via just 12v (which takes forever) and usually do it whilst driving.

You are right Ron and Shirley. there are 4 x 12 volt points in the living area of the van, none of which work. Two are down by the back lift up door and two just inside the sliding door.
I asked the previous owner and he said he had never used them so wouldn't know why they didn't work.
It would be easy enough to get a 12v point and have it added as you suggest. Thanks for that advice.
I do charge the phone while travelling in the one at the front but as you say it takes forever.

The puter, I just plug in as I use it. Battery shot anyway.

Hmmm strange one that. I have that tv exactly, Palsonic Digital (not HD) but mine did not come with the 12v lead. I did as above - ie cut the lead tv side of the box and wired a plug to the 'house' battery and it works like a charm.

I am sure that as yours was supplied with a ciggy lighter plug it was designed to run from an auto (12 - 13.8v) without issue.
