I was reading this post and I sort of got annoyed with all the banter in the middle. Can people send PM's to one another to save gunking up the thread so others can read it.
Not being nasty, just a thought and trying to keep the original topic
Thanks

It really is a stupid idea. The idiots would be targeting the seniors as others have said. One thing I thought of, you said the others have L and P plates. I would think it would have to be Purple S plate but I wouldn't want to put it on Myrtle. Seniors, Senile, they would have us all off the road for good.

S = silly senile senior? I don't think so either Marj!
I agree - Purple S (or any other colour S) for 'seniors' is not going to do a thing ... and as said, may even provoke unwanted attention.
That said, I have always been an advocate for a written/computer(?) test with each licence renewal and a practical (actually driving a vehicle) test with each other licence renewal.
Keeps us all up to date with road law, and assesses our ability to control a vehicle.
Age is not, by itself, a determinant of competance or lack or it, some 25 year olds are useless and reckless etc .... as are 35, 45, 55, 65, 75 etc etc ... conversely ... many are good drivers throughout their lives.
Just my thoughts
Cheers
John

Darling the person suggesting that must be having a huge mental defective day. Darling it would never ever happen. Darling in some states they have removed aged driving tests this last couple of weeks as there was no evidence the mature aged had more accidents or caused any issues compared to other age drivers.

I had better declare my interest before posting my thoughts.
I own a driving school and am a driving instructor.
Obviously, I have on several occassions I am called upon to help the "old aged driver" to come up to speed to pass the driving test. (Pun intended)
I tend to agree with the thoughts of "rockylizard."
I personally would like to see ALL licences have a lifetime of 5 years, then to renew the licence another on road test be conducted. This IMO would filter out the bad habits one acquires in the five year period and make drivers stay aware of any new rules that may have been implemented. Not to mention obeying the "old" laws correctly.
Now for the cancelling of "old age tests."
The bureaucrat that came up with that, must have been having a brain fade.
The logic doesn't hold water and it would make a great plot for an episode of "Yes Minister."
Lets look at the logic:-
As a percentage, drivers in the 85+ age group are considered to be of a lower risk than the "P" platers or drivers in the 18-25 age group.
In fact, they are of such a low risk that to continue to ask them to do a drivering test is to be considered "discrimination."
Fact:- Elderly drivers coming up for the test who do not think they will pass the test, more often than not, either let the licence expire or hand it back.
The borderline cases often ask for professional advice (lessons) and during these a large percentage decide not to renew their licence also.
This leaves the remaining drivers who go on to do their driving test.
A high percentage of these do not pass the test and another group are given "Restricted Licences" enabling them to drive locally to the doctor, etc.
That leaves the remainder of "hopefully" good drivers on the road. THIS IS THE GROUP THE STATISTICS ARE BASED ON?
Removing the test, has just placed all the others who fail to recognise that their skill levels have dropped to a dangerous level, back on the road.
EG:-The 90 year old gentleman up the road can now go out and buy a caravan, hook it up to the car and go on holidays? Regardless of his skill levels?
The following letter was in my latest The Road Ahead, RACQ's members magazine.
"When driving, we take into account the abilities of P and L platers and give them extra consideration. But what about drivers over 70? Why can't they have, say, a purple P plate, if they would like to display one? It would show other road users that our elderly parents and grandparents sometimes need our patience and consideration on the roads as well."
What do you think?
Rubbish, I will be 70 in 2 years time . I think we have enough big brother going on at the moment without drawing attention to the older generation .Suggest instead warning plates be issued to consistant traffic offenders .( look out, Im old)yer right.
