Change of Travel Plans

OK change of travel plans....we are now heading north to Townsville and then west to Charters Towers.

Now I know that Fletchers Creek is very popular at CT but what about some of the others please and CAW6 reference if possible.

After being hold up in a CP for the last 3 months I am very keen to free camp as much as possible.

I am looking for suggestions in or around Townsville if there is anything and also perhaps something between Bowen and Townsville, again if there is anything.

Probably heading as far west as the Curry before heading south but no fixed itinerary at this stage.

And again it must be pet friendly to accommodate my 2 little girls.

Thanks a bunch everyone for all your help, you input is invaluable and very much appreciated.

Cheers B

Two I can think of are Funny dunny park, at Wunjunga, just south of Inkerman, 10 klms sth of Home hill, and Wallaces landing, also sth of Home hill. Both are off the road, and quiet. Wallaces has great mud crab fishing. There are a lot of spots around Home hill/Ayr. just ask the locals. Bill

I have never stayed there but a bloke at Fletcher Creek told me about a place Macrossan Park, about 20 k out of Charters towards Townsville
North of Townsville are: Saunders Beach, good but be early. Blue Water, Tomalla Beach, Rollingstone, these spots are limited to about 2 days but good spots.

As well as the budget camps that have been advised the Blue Water Caravan park approximately 20klm north of Townsville takes dogs and has large sites.

 Gday...

I came past Macrossan Park on my way to Ravenswood earlier in the week. There are roadworks going on for a fair bit before and after the Burdekin River Bridge and I did not see the Macrossan Park sign or turnoff so it may be 'disrupted' by the roadworks.

I will check this morning on my way back into Charters Towers and let you know. I too had heard it was a nice place to stay.

Another nice place was Camps6 288 (Campaspe Rest Area 99km west of Charters Towers). A nice big area, grass, trees, shade, toilets. Has a 20hour limit but many stay for two nights.

If you go further west visit Porcupine Gorge - a really nice place to spend a day. Camps6 295 - 70km north of Hughenden). The road up is now 95% sealed and the 5% dirt is in very good condition. I left my van in Hughenden and just spent the day there.

Julia Creek free-camp is a nice place. Right on the east side of town on the Julia Creek (the actual creek). Camps6 304 says 48 hours, but if you register in Shire office you can stay much longer. There was a bloke who had been there 5 weeks when I was there. Council workers keep an eye on the place and actually come around and check to make sure you know where the water is etc (good water). Very friendly place.

Cheers

John

I might be wrong, but Bluewater just north of Townsville is a freecamp site.

Gday...

On my way into Charters Towers this morning I confirmed the entrance to Macrossan Park, 22km east Charters Towers (Camps6 283 - east side of Burdekin River bridge and south of highway) still exists.

The roadwork is on the east side of the bridge and in addition to upgrading the highway and bridge approach, they have re-aligned the entrance to Macrossan Park - which is why I had not noticed the turnoff on my way west last week.

Coming from Townsville (heading west) the sign is still there on the left but is very dirty from the roadworks - it is a wooden, green sign close to the ground. The entrance it points to does not exist now. About 100metre further along on the left is a new access road which loops back to the original access road. It is easy to see when going at the 60kph roadwork speed limit and looking for it.

The Burdekin River looks magnificent at the moment. Not heaps of water but what is there is meandering between the rocks and sandy bed dunes and looks great.

I had a new windscreen fitted in Townsville yesterday, but there is a problem with it. Hopefullty O'Briens Glass in Charters Towers can rectify the problem quickly Monday, if not and I have to wait for 'bits', then I will camp at Macrossan Park for a few days waiting.

Cheers

John

We will not be heading that way for about 2 weeks so please keep the suggestions coming and I will continue checking the map.

There is a CP called Bluewater about 35 kliks north of Townsville on the right. Big sites, very little shade and fairly basic park. About another 2 kliks further north on the left is the Bluewater free camp. A very nice spot with toilets, outside cold shower, over the oval at back is a sports club that loves visitors and have burger, chips and beer specials. Roling stone on the right closer to Townsville is also a good camp, to the rear of the pub.

Thanks everyone....not sure we are actually heading into T'ville at this point.  It is really only another place we will pass through our way to Charters Towers which is more the destination.

I am also more looking for free campsites, especially after being in a CP for the last 3 months....I am really over them and looking for some freedom.

Thanks a bunch.

Cheers B

Its very difficult to get comms at Fletchers Creek itself .. and that includes phone, net and TV .. but you can get phone (next G) about 5 k's from there back towards Charters Towers ..

Just had 4 days at Macrossan Park down under the old railway bridge....it was lovely. A lovely grassy verge on which to camp and fabulous view of the river.

However if you are a bit precious about the noise of the passing trains....this is not for you.

It also requires an off road vehicle or at least one with very good clearance to get down the hill and back up again.

I agree John, the Burdekin is looking great at the moment, the water is clean and clear.

Cheers B
