We've only been home a week, and claimed to be tired, yet here we are planning another trip!!
When travelling to the Gulf, I wanted to take a train ride on the Gulflander from Croyden to Normanton, but the question is, how do you go and visit Karumba if you've left your rig at Croyden?
They do a return trip Gerty the next day, but it would mean staying overnight at one end (Croydon or Normanton). By the way, there is a free camp at Normanton on the river bank near the bridge.
We stayed at one of the two caravan parks at Normanton (the one with the big barra outside) and just did a short few hour trip in the Gulflander from Normanton to a station (Black Stump or something) and then back to Normanton again. It is a pretty rough and slow ride so I reckon that is about all you would need. We are not keen fishermen so only did a day road trip (bitumen) from Normanton to Karumba (make sure you visit the Barra Fish Breeding tanks there) and back again, 75 kms each way. Karumba was very crowded but it may have thinned out now that it is into the wet up there. We really enjoyed at stay at Normanton, we could have stayed there longer (that was around June last year).
Thanks Onedodger and Vic. Have saved that page to favourites, looks really interesting. We just have to get there before the crowds, going to try May next year if all goes well.
The same people run the Savannahlander up from Cairns up to Forsyth. It's a return trip - 3 days, 2 nights up, and then back again staying at different places. I would have thought the Gulflander was a return trip as well with accommodation included in the price. Ask questions or look it up on the net. It's all there.

Scroll down on this link for the short trips starting and finishing in Normanton.
Be aware that whatever you choose, book early as sometimes tours buses book the trains out, including the short trips, also they only go on certain days.....
