Sounds like you are paying "Autogas" price for your gas.
Is it legal to fill 9kg domestic gas bottles from the vehicle gas pumps at the servo?

While it might not be quite legal, I have it from a reliable source that it is the same gas in the bowser that they fill up your bottles with.

The servos can charge more for the refills.
Elaine, I have done some checking up on this, firstly it is highly illegal with huge fines up to $40,000.00
Autogas is a mixture of propane and butane to increase octane rating.
Cyl lpg is propane
It is not only illegal to use autogas in portable cylinders but very dangerous

Interesting but rubbish. How come we dont get killed in our campervan in Europe where we use butane, propane butane mix or propane all on the same appliances. Gas regulators and jets internationally are now referred to for universal gas. Australia & NZ have ratified the universal gas standard. Asked Dometic and Swift Appliances if changes were needed with gas mix. Said no changes were necessary. Brought back a Truma automatic change over regulator from Germany and marked universal gas. Post on the UK and German forums and they will kill themselves laughing about killing people with carbon monoxide from burning butane or butane propane mix.
How come thousands are not dying using autogas? Every grey nomad with LPG vehicle has a tap to draw off liquid to fill 9kg bottles. Personally know 20 with adapters to fill 9kg bottles with autogas and amazing all alive and well.

So there is a difference between the two? I don't like using gas anyway so would hate to think the wrong one had been put in my gas bottle.
Some of the servos refill 9kg bottle from the pump or refill their filler bottles from the pump. Same tanker fills up autogas fills up bulk bottle to fill small gas bottles

These decisions by New Zealand have resulted in agreement by GTRC members to work proactively to progress mutual recognition of regulations relating to use of gas appliances across Australia and New Zealand, where possible. Initial discussions focussed on the mutual recognition of regulations relating to natural gas appliances. For LPG appliances, mutual recognition is not straightforward. It is proposed to allow for mutual recognition of LPG appliances tested to operate safely on universal LPG, and permanently exempt those LPG appliances not tested to operate safely on universal LPG and flueless cabinet heaters

At this stage and with the stoves currently available, I would rather listen to qualified experts who strongly advise against using propane/butane mixture in stoves, but people here can listen to self claimed experts on different forums including this one and make their olwn minds up.
Me I will pay the small difference and buy the correct stuff avoid the penalties and styay safe

Perfectly legal with 10 mins training and get a certificate from gas company
Autogas is the same gas fill up bulk cylinders for filling bottles
Well that puts a different slant on your original posts, as it is not for the average Caravanner with no gas certification. Maybe things are different around Albury re service stations allowing you to fill your 9kg bottle, LOL.
Yes Gary and Goingsoon, I was fully aware what you have posted is the case.
However David just needed enough rope. His follow ups have confirmed, which I have seen before on other Forums.
Soon we will get the Mac Coupler story, LOL.
HW just pay your moneys at the Camping stores, and the servos that fill from the large bottles, and all will be well. Rip off, most definitely, but why take the risk playing with gas.
Something I copied from another forum some time ago
Firstly the Autogas issue - the gas you want in your van has to be a MINIMUM of 97% Propane (it will have a small amount of Butane & Isobutanes in it). The autogas product doesn't have to comply to this requirement. The Butane & Isobutanes don't burn as cleanly (produce some Carbon Monoxide) which is fine coming out the exhaust of a car, but not so good coming off your stove. I'm not saying that autogas isn't 97% Propane, but it doesn't have to be, so it's a pretty big gamble to take.
Oh I do Ron and Shirley. I will always go to the proper place to fill my bottle. Was just querying all the different angles on this subject, there is so many different point of views.
(Australian) LPG gas appliances are specifically designed to burn pure propane at the temperature that ensures the complete combustion that is vital to ensure to prevent the otherwise generation of deadly carbon monoxide: this temperature varies from gas to gas. Most Autogas contains butane and that butane has sufficiently different chemical characteristics as to preclude complete combustion in an appliance intended to run on propane. There is thus a very real risk of carbon monoxide gas being generated. (European LPG is a mixture of propane and butane, but the associated appliances are designed accordingly).
The AIPs Safety and Standards Officer, Stephen Reynolds confirms that the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning is very real. He told The Wanderer that [Australian] appliances are approved for propane . . . but Autogas generally contains butane. Appliances run on this will not have pure combustion. . . this will affect different appliances variously. . . but some become virtual carbon monoxide generators.
The only too real dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning have been stressed in The Wanderer from time to time. It is not something to mess with even low levels are particularly dangerous for older people and even more so for those with high blood pressure. Australian data is not available but it kills over 30,000 Americans each year. Most were campers and RV users who misused gas appliances. The Insurance Risk
Substituting Autogas for bottled LPG has serious insurance implications. The practice is illegal and almost all insurance policies explicitly exclude cover for any accident that is a consequence of illegal action.
Gary Hughes of Ken Tame and Associates advises The Wanderer that because purchasing Autogas for domestic use is an illegal activity, any accident, injury or death that may occur as a result of this type of activity would probably invalidate most insurance policies, including compulsory third party insurance. Could such gas substitution be subsequently detected? You bet: the insurance industry is well aware of this practice: the content of your gas bottle is the first thing the investigator will check.
Just Re-iterating what has already been said.... Duckster this is not rubbish.....
You are condoning a deadly practice....

Thanks gubby, good to hear from you again with your sensible advice. Looking forward to seeing Marion and your good self at Greens. Do you think you will be able to make it for a couple of days?
To the ones that claim there is no difference, would you sit in a caravan with the exhaust of a vehicle running on Autogas connected into the van.... That is what you are doing if you burn autogas in your stove....
Not to mention the sickening smell of rotten egg gas, often detected when near a car fuelled by Autogas.
Thanks Gubby for the backup, there are too many self claimed experts around, I would rather go by the advice from qualified experts who agree with the stance that we both take and that is two different gases, use each for what they are intended and all will be well.
