G'day all

thought I'd try for the record of highest number of new threads in a week or so.

I've had some great things fall into place in the last couple of weeks. Like finding a well priced suitable van just in time for the caravan training course - would have had to wait at least 6 months ofr the next one.

And today I found a great used fibreglass canopy for my traytop ute which are as rare as hens teeth. New prices for a canvas canopy are a min of $1500 including frame and fibreglass are astronomical - start at $2500 and can be $4000. The canopy was 50km from me which is even more amazing.

Another piece of good luck is finding an extremely competent autoelectrician nomad who just happens to be in town for a while. He understands the set up needs for being on the road and will fit out my van according to need.

I could easily live in the van as is and am just adding solar and a few other things.

 

All this stuff happening now inspires me and gives me great confidence.

Great to hear Ellen. I can immagine how you feel. My possible Townsville trip is becoming to a goer. I have put it down on paper and fine tuned travel distance to approx 350km per day, that should give me time each day to check out a few sights each day along the way. Got Camps6 and caravan parks Australia wide already, got a lend of a Navman GPS but so far I think I might stick with paper maps and get a cb radio fitted to the car instead, that way I will have contact with trucks etc if no phone cover. The more I think about it the more it is going to happen. Hope you find a good auto elec.

I was checking out costs for a cb/uhf and thought the costs were a bit much - at least $300 for the radio, another $100 for the airial and $150 pr so to have it installed and wired up.  I saw on ebay you can get 12v handset ones for about $100-$150.

Several people have told me they hardly use their uhf so you might want to consider if it's worth it.

I'm thinking one of those reversing cameras with a 7" screen gps would be a good investment - they are on ebay at reasonable prices.

The 7" GPS from Ebay are good and can perform many tasks, I have a Movie on mine, 150 music tracks and several Ebooks. It also has a reversing camera however there may be a couple of downsides, I do not think that they are compatible with Camps to download the co-ordinates etc. and mine does not have some of the selection features that I saw on a fellow travellers Navman and the updates may be a problem later.

On the positive side it does get you where you want to go and I used it going through Sydney and Adelaide looking for Cruising Granny. Also wherever a clear address was available it took me there easily. The thing needed is the correct suburb and that is not always available, for example looking for Joalah National Park in Mt Tambourine I had troubles because Mt Tambourine and Tambourine came up blank before I found that the correct suburb was Eagle Heights.

I know it's probably a dumb question but where do I look on the internet to find out if I can download the camps data into the Garmin.

I've been pushing Mum (Fairy-Nuff) to get a CB radio. She may NEVER use it, but if it's there when it's required and gets her out of only one sticky situation, it's money well spent.

There is a download that you can get from Garmin and it finds your gps and then allows you to download.

It is best if you find the gps file and rename to a new name so that you dont override the old one if you want it.

This way you can have a camps file a dump point file and aldi file etc all available and you can update any one when wanted.

If you want specific details I can do an instruction sheet for you.
