I am trying to sell a motorhome through ebay and a person in US texts me and says she wants to buy it. I am suspicious as its an international number.She says she wants to pay through Paypal, and lo and behold ,she has my email address, which I didnt give her.Anyway, Paypal doesnt know her, and I would not give her bank details, so I suppose thats the end of it. I contacted the ACCC, and gave them her details.The ph. no is in Conteticat,US. Has anybody else been scamed or have they tried? you definately have to have your wits about you these days. Bill
Definately a scam!! It was tried on us earlier this year when we tried to sell our old vehicle. As soon as the advertisement to sell is put onto the internet - thru whatever website - they will be in contact.
I nearly got caught selling a motorbike and they say they go thru an agent who will pick up the object, but you have to pay his costs which go thru western union. definately a scam Ken
No doubt Bill, I use Gumtree mostly to sell things including RV's etc, and I get those replies also, in one form or the other, all asking to use Pay Pal and want you to open an account.
Mostly overseas or on an oil rig wanting to buy for a relative or something.

Thanks , BobnBev. I tried to sell it at auction, but didn,t get to reserve price.The fair trading mob know of this scam, and police have been adviced. I decided to get a slide on, or stick with my present Bait box.Nice older vehicle, though.
the problem is they want you to set up a new paypal account and they send you to their version of the paypal site (a bogus site) controlled by them, in turn they tell you the money is in your account and you then send the item to them, they have not paid you and then they resell the item.
You won,t believe it, but 2 other idiots are trying the same scam with me.You have got to quesion the intelligence of these people.They must think that there is one born every minute.One emailed me at 01.18am.I thought that was a bit dodgy. Bill
It would be nice if we could get back at these crims.I , personally, would like to meet these people, one on one, and see how long they last.Selling an asset is stressful enough, without people trying to take advantage of you.

Sadly they may be right and that's how they make a dollar! Some of these scams (Nigerian letter, lottery "win", etc) play on people's innate greed.
Greed and Common Sense are often mutually exclusive, Intelligence and Stupidity can and often do co-exist.
Never click on a link in an email that may look even a tiny bit "sus"
If checking to see if a deal or message is "kosher" enter the site suggested by typing in the home page (e.g. www .ebay .com .au or whatever) in the address bar and drill down through the site to requested page. Especially if it involves logging in.

PS: Paypal will never give out bank or credit card details. This is the "strength" of the Paypal system, an exchange of funds can take place without the vendor or purchaser having access to these details.

its got something to do with Globalization. I put an add on ebay and someone from the states tries to scam me. It shows how connected we are these days. Its a question whether this is a good or bad thing. I like the internet, but there are pitfalls.A bit like life Isuppose' Bill
