Gday...

Depends when ya go ... in the dry and after grading - 2WD no worries - if not then 4WD recommended.

I have been there three times. First time, winter and dry road was a hoot - just rocked along in the HiLux 4x4 with off-road camper sitting on 80kph - both in and out. Second time road roughish but still 2WD would have coped with caution.

Last time going in road was dry but hadn't been graded for a while. Still some good bits but constantly encountering rough, rutted, holey patches requiring slowing down. While we were in there, it rained ...... stuck in there for six days - could not drive ANYWHERE even around the camping area. Even walking was difficult.

But it dries out pretty quick and we got out - but without 4x4 getting out would still have been fun.

Check with Nat Park mob at Mungo - the Dunes drive has been closed due to damage from last year's wet - and I believe they have closed a lot of the roads due to weather damage - and they have decided not to waste money doing them up. So self-guided touring a bit more restricted these days. Additionally, it is getting so popular they need to control damage to the 'significant areas' which they were not as careful with previously.

cheers

John
