Interesting. I have Coopers - now the 2nd set. The first set were on the Discovery when I bought it. I really thought they were JUST roadworthy when I bought the car and was prepared to renew tyres fairly soon.
12,000km later I finally renewed them (Dec last year and they were still not right down to the wear indicator) and the replacement Coopers (same type Discoverer H/T Plus) have now done 21,000km and really look like new - there is HEAPS before the wear indicator will be close to top of thread.
Having said all of that .... I have met SOOOOOOO many people - with varying makes of vehicle - who have experienced poor wear rate on Coopers. I guess they are better suited to some vehicles more than others.

I have Coopers AT....on My Pajero.....they are great........but only one thing .....they aquaplane badly on the slightest wet road....done 18,000klm.....and they still have the rubber pins on...look like they were fitted yesterday....not 14 months ago
ours lasted just on 40k . they were down to wear indicators so i contacted coopers about their guarantee and was told that it was void because i had been outside the metropolitan area!!!! pretty handy we thought.

I'd have to agree with H & J there. Tyres should, in my humble opinion, be judged more on their ability to grip the road and provide feedback and control and not simply for their ability to last a long time.
I use Simes Alpinas on my Patrol, I got nearly 100,000 km on the last set and they don't aquaplane (I rotate regularly)

I have absolutely no grip problems with the Cooper Discoverer H/T Plus on my Discovery. They grip incredibly well in the dry and have never caused me the slightest problem in the wet.
I also drive off road with them - gravel, mud, grass, rocky low-range, climbing hills ... I have been astounded by how good their 'road pattern' performs as an all-round tyre.
I pumped them up in Dec 2010 to the pressures for towing (36psi front/44psi rear) and I check them regularly. I have only had to add air to them twice since Dec 2010.
Again, it does seem that different tyres seem to perform differently on various vehicles.

H&J.......all round the coopers are good.....its only on wet roads they get a mind of their own.....the people that put them on my vehicle...have checked and rechecked.....and cant understand why they act like they do in the wet....

I'm running 38psi all round ......this week to see if that makes any difference...use to be 36f 38 R
I'm currently looking to replace the All-Terrains on my Landcruiser. I put them on in 2004 and they still have tread, but I really have to start planning to get new ones. I don't go off road very much but I do dirt roads, a lot of black top and bush tracks sometimes. So I want to be prepared for all contingencies. I'm looking at Goodie's All-Terrains again, or Dunlop, but not Coopers or Micky Thompsons.

I have had a good run out of maxxis, doing 40000klms on the last set, and they are half price of any coopers, I can buy. I have had mixed reports about coopers, with me having to lend a bloke my spare when he blew 2 coopers on the peninsula dev track.Too expensive for what you get.Bill

I bought Maxxis 771's myself in Jan this year as they were much much cheaper than the big name brands. I don't yet have personal experience in regard to their longevity but they perform very well in my opinion. Before buying them I read up a lot about them on other forums & reviews & found they were rated highly by most that have or are using them.

I fitted Cooper Discoverer ATR's on my 1992 Toyota 4Runner and got in excess of 70,000K out of them. They still had plenty of tread left on them when I sold the vehicle at this stage, and no problem at all with grip in the wet. I have clocked up just over 10,000K on another set of Cooper ATR's, this time on my Troopy, and once again have had great performance from them. I usually run about 40psi in them on the Troopy. I did try B.F. Goodrich on the 4Runner before the Coopers, and found they started aquaplaning once they had about 30,000K on them and they were about half worn.
On some insurance policies in the small print there is a bit about the weight ratio of the tyre and for our set up and type of vehicle it had to be 109 or greater and there were only two brands that fit that requirement and one was Maxxis and the other was Pirellie
Evidently if the ration is under that figure and you have an accident they can decline accepting your claim
coopers are the worst tyres I have ever used. hopeless in the wet and could not keep them balanced. The Michelin Synchrones that replaced them 98,000 klms not a problem

Gee - this could develope into such an emotional discussion and probablty pointless discussion .... I am surprised how some vehicles have such terrible stories regarding various tyres.
Regarding the quote above ... as I said I have Cooper Discoverer H/T Plus on the Discovery 3, only one tyre required balancing and the 4th tyre has a small weight less than half an inch long (dunno the weight) - that surprised me incredibly. And when rotated (every 5,000km) I have not had even a minor unbalance evident.

I should research some other tyres now .... I definitely AM NOT a salesdude for Cooper. This vehicle is the first I have had with them fitted. I have always used Dunlop on my previous vehicles from about 1994 to 2007 - except for the Hankooks on the Terracan because it came with them.

We went to Tyre Power and looked at all the specs in the book that they have comparing each tyre and what the specs for each of them were.
The LT/AT in the Maxxis and the Pirrelli were the only two that came in at the required specs for our insurance policy
Just think this is probably not the right time for this thread, they are sponsoring the 1st prize in photo comp..............sponsors can't be easy to come by nowadays, just my opinion.

Yep! it pays to read the small print on the guarantee cards . Couldn't believe it when I was doing my research on 4X4 tyres for my Pathfinder
