I lived in Wynyard about 6 years ago and there was a Lactos cheese outlet up Old Surrey Rd. Burnie. I'm sure its still there, up behind where the Paper Pulp was.
I will ask Bob and Rhonda when we go over for happy hour and get back to you N & R.
We went to the visitor info centre today which is in the Makers Market or whatever you call it and there was no mention of a cheese factory of any kind in the area.
There was an outlet for Tasmanian Cheeses in the centre but they weren't very forthcoming with samples...........read........didn't get any......
Yeah Ma, I'm with you ?? if they want to sell the product, they MUST supply Tasting ?? I once went to the Belgium Chocolate factory in Daylesford Vic, the range of chocolate looked really good, but very expensive, as Good chocolate normally is ? However seeing as i could not taste it first, i only bought a very small 5 pce block [ @ $4.85 ]
Well later that night, when we sat down and ate it YUMMO, if they had let me taste it first, I am sure i would have spent ay least $50 - $80. Gladly as it was really really good, Wether it be Wine, Cheese, or Chocolate, let me taste, and if i like, I will buy, dazren
Cheese was Duck River cheese factory at wynyard, lactos (?) at surry road in burnie was a fresh milk but now also distill a good drop of wisky. cheers blaze

Ashgrove Cheese at Elizabeth Town is a great place to visit as well. They were generous with their tastings last time we were there. Also lots of fruit based liquers and wines. Fantastic milkshakes too. Can't wait to get back to Tassie in January. I love how everything is really just a day trip away.If you're there for a while, head down to Kettering for some WONDERFUL cherries straight form the farms. Also the Evandale markets on a Sunday for lots of local produce and interesting bits and pieces to look at. Enjoy!
In responce to comments above I found this on the Council web site and have cut and pasted here for all to see, additionally I have advised the Burnie Mayor Steve Kons that the facility they are spruking is not upto scratch.

The Cheese Tasting Centre shut its doors for the final time last Friday 28 October 2011.
Burnie City Councils General Manager Mr Paul Arnold said, The Centre has been a Burnie institution to many.
But this is not all bad news for Burnie cheese lovers.
The move heralds the physical start of a dramatic site development at Old Surrey Road that will see a $120 million investment in Burnie creating a 25,000 tonne cheese making capacity per annum, which requires a massive building expansion.
This represents a major commitment from the company Lion (formally known as National Foods) to the Tasmanian dairy industry.
Because of this huge expansion there just isnt room to continue the cheese tasting. The company approached Council as the Cheese Shop needed a new home and neither party wanted to see this great centre leave Burnie, Mr Arnold said.
After months of negotiations, a new Cheese Shop is now open for business at the Makers Workshop and Information Centre.
The Cheese Shop is open for business today but will be officially launched on 9 November 2011. This means that local people can still buy their favourite cheese seven days a week, talk to local cheese experts about the perfect accompaniment to their cheese and potentially expose Burnies cheese products to more visitors than ever before, he said.
The Makers Workshop and Visitor Information Centre can be found at two Bass Highway and is open seven days a week 9am to 5pm.

Recieved a reply to my email from Mayor Steven Kon's this morning thanking me for our comments and said he is looking into it, '"Those that know Steven Kon's will be confident that he will ask the right questions of the right people" There will be change. He offered to get back to me with feed back but I declined as I am confident of a outcome.
